Due to a service redesign to increase diagnostic capacity in Ophthalmology services across Staffordshire and Derbyshire localities, we are looking to significantly expand our team of Diagnostic Ophthalmic Technicians to support with the implementation of new diagnostic lanes. These diagnostic lanes will provide the throughput needed to meet the current and future demand in Ophthalmology with this model creating a sustainable service which safely manages the increasing demand in Ophthalmology.
As Lead Diagnostic Technician your role will be to provide clinical leadership and day to day management and support to the Diagnostic Ophthalmic team. You will be the role model for all clinical diagnostic testing of patients to include:
- Visual acuity testing. - Optical Coherance Tomography of the Optic nerve and Retinal nerve fibre layer. - Optical Coherence Tomography of the Retina and Macula. - Static perimetry using the Humphrey Visual Field analyser. - Fundus photography using Optos. - Focimetry and transposition. - Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements using non-contact tonometry (e.g. iCare tonometer). - Biometry on a clinical need basis (site dependent).
Main duties of the job
To provide clinical leadership to the Diagnostic Ophthalmic Technicians (DOTs) in the delivery of Ophthalmology diagnostic clinics. Providing supervision, expert advice, tuition, and competency assessment of DOT colleagues.
Supporting the Head of Orthoptic services and Operational Lead Orthoptists to undertake supervision of the Diagnostic Ophthalmic Technician team as required.
Provide day to day leadership and supervision to the Diagnostic Ophthalmic Team. Leadership tasks will include taking responsibility for the clinical timetable and daily whereabouts of the team to ensure appropriate clinical diagnostic cover across all sites in the Staffordshire or Derbyshire area. This will also involve co-ordination of annual leave requests and other absence management e.g. sickness absence, carer's absence, and emergency leave.
- To take responsibility for the professional development of individuals in the Diagnostic Ophthalmic Technician team by conducting appraisals, clinical supervision and wellbeing checks. - Provide cross-site support as requested by Operational Lead Orthoptists. - Administrative and additional duties as requested by the Head of Orthoptic Service or Operational Lead Orthoptists.
