Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Diabetes & Endocrinology department as a LAS Speciality Registrar (ST3+ level) from October 2026 to February 2027.

Diabetes and Endocrinology is a diverse speciality that offers integration between basic biochemistry, human physiology and practical medicine. It is a largely outpatient-based speciality that many doctors have limited exposure to early in their career, yet these are conditions that affect every spectrum of society. You will work with various patient groups such as young adults, pregnant women and the elderly population, as well as with many other disciplines and specialities.

The post would be ideal for individuals considering or completing IM3 training. Whether you are considering a career in D&E, just want to gain experience at better managing these diverse conditions or further hone your skills in GIM before commencing further training, this post is a unique opportunity to learn about the holistic multidisciplinary medical care. The post will build in opportunities for individuals to carry out audit, service improvement, research etc. based on the training needs of the individual and will give candidates a clear advantage over competitors when it comes to applications for specialty training posts in the future.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties will include looking after inpatients admitted under the diabetes and endocrine directorate. Based on the level of the individual’s experience, they will also be expected to review inpatient referrals to D&E, under the supervision of a dedicated consultant. There will also be a mixture of outpatient clinics, again dependant on the individual’s level of experience. Appropriate training will be provided to enable the individual to take up these roles.

There is also a regular Acute General Medicine on-call commitment, including nights and weekends.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Directorate currently has facilities located on both RHH and NGH sites, with a bed complement of around 64 beds at the NGH site.

Outpatient clinics are provided in the Sheffield Diabetes & Endocrine Centre at NGH and Medical Outpatients at RHH. There are two Diabetes Centres which provide multi professional specialist outpatient services, and a team of dedicated inpatient specialist nurses who support the whole Trust. The specialist team comprises medical staff, specialist nurses, dieticians, podiatrists and psychologists. In addition there are group patient education facilities at NGH where the multi professional team provide structured patient educational programmes. We offer specialist clinics in all aspects of diabetes but the department works closely with their academic colleagues in the following areas: diabetes education and self-management (DAFNE and DESMOND programmes), hypoglycaemia unawareness, painful neuropathy and the diabetic foot. The department works very closely and collaboratively with Sheffield CCG and there is a fully integrated community diabetes service.

There is a philosophy and culture of innovation within the department and the service has won multiple national awards in recent years. It is one of a handful of directorates that holds academic status and has an international reputation in research, particularly in the fields of hypoglycaemia, structured education and neuropathy.

The Endocrinology Department leads the Sheffield ENETS European Neuroendocrine Tumour Service, one of 10 in the UK, and provides local, regional and national services for patients with general and specialist endocrine disease. There is a dedicated investigation unit at RHH, managed by a highly experienced endocrine specialist nursing team who provide comprehensive, specialist outpatient investigation and care.

The D&E directorate have close working relationships with other clinical departments at STH and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, in order to deliver high quality care including:

  • Vascular and Renal
  • Endocrine Surgery
  • Neurosciences
  • Haematology
  • Oncology
  • Antenatal and gynaecology services
  • Adolescent, transitional and young person clinics
