This is an exciting opportunity to spend a year as a dedicated teaching fellow in the Emergency Department (ED) at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.  The Emergency Department is partnered with the Peninsula Medical School – University of Plymouth, and aims to provide high quality clinical experience of Emergency Medicine for students in years 3 to 5.

PHNT is the largest teaching and acute hospital in the South West, providing general hospital services alongside regional specialist services to a diverse population, with a wide variation in health and life expectancy, including areas of high deprivation and coastal poverty.  PHNT has an established reputation for high quality research and, in a city with a strong military tradition, is host to a tri-services staff of over 200 military doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

Main duties of the job

Job Purpose

The post holder will focus on facilitating student learning by providing teaching and support on the shop floor of the ED.  Students in years 3 and 4 spend one pathway week with us in the ED, learning about the management of sick and injured patients.  Each week culminates in a Consultant lead clinical reasoning session.  The post holder will be available throughout the working week, teaching small groups of students within the ED, providing tutorials, delivering clinical skills teaching and assessing competencies.

Year 5 students are attached to the department in 6-week blocks and are encouraged to work alongside the clinical team, clerking patients and practicing clinical skills.  The post holder will be responsible for guiding and supporting this process, as well as providing opportunities for case based teaching and discussion.

This post is a fixed term, full time, dedicated teaching fellow role and as such, there will be no expectation to contribute to on call or clinical service delivery.  Teaching will be during academic term time only and as such the post holder is required to take annual leave during medical school holidays.  The role offers a unique opportunity for personal and career development, promoting specialist-teaching skills, augmented by completing a “PGCert” if the post holder wishes to do so.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Primary Duties/Areas of Responsibility

The post holder will work closely with Dr. Siân Duffield (ED Clinical Teacher Lead) and the Clinical Liaison Team, to deliver high quality undergraduate Emergency Medicine education to Peninsula Medical School students based in Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

Clinical supervision of the post will be provided from within the ED.  The Medical school runs monthly education and training days for all teaching fellows, which will provide a good opportunity for networking and support.

Duties of the role include:

• Acting as key clinical liaison for medical students during their clinical pathway placements in ED.
• Demonstrating and teaching relevant practical and clinical skills within both the clinical environment and simulated teaching scenarios.
• Leading clinical teaching within pathway weeks and developing local departmental teaching opportunities for students.
• Liaison with the wider ED team to facilitate BMBS teaching within the department.
• Undertaking formal teaching both face to face and using remote platforms when required.
• Providing ad hoc teaching and case based discussions within the clinical environment, and liaising with the senior clinical team when necessary.
• Supporting quality assurance arrangements for clinical teaching within departments, as directed by the Pathway Leads/Hospital Sub Dean.
• Attending monthly teaching fellow education afternoons and when required, monthly clinical teacher meetings.

The post holder will comply with all local policies, including dress code. Other than in exceptional circumstances, leave will only be taken during medical student holidays.  Duties and hours will be undertaken across Monday to Friday. Specific work patterns will be agreed with candidates following successful interview.  Successful applicant will be a key member of the Undergraduate Medical Education Team and will take responsibility for supporting clinical learning within the clinical environment.

Successful post holders will have the option to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCert.), funded by the Peninsula Medical School, through the University of Plymouth.
