The position of Junior Clinical Fellow in Virology is available in Virology at The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. This post will be based within the Virology Department at the Royal Free Hospital which is part of the Infection Service Line which includes Medical Virology, Medical Microbiology, HIV Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

The Royal Free Virology clinical service provides expert clinical advice, guidance and training in all aspects of clinical virology including diagnostic stewardship, result interpretation, clinical management, antiviral drug use and infection prevention and control within the Trust, its satellite services and referring centres situated both in primary and secondary/tertiary care. The department has a particular interest and expertise in:

  • Opportunistic infections in the immunocompromised host (primary immunodeficiency, HIV infection and solid organ Transplant)
  • HIV infection
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Antenatal and paediatric infections
  • Blood-borne viruses in Haemodialysis
  • High-consequence infectious diseases

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected, under the supervision of appropriate senior members of staff, to become familiar with the organisation of the department, to learn first-hand the examination and investigation of specimens submitted to the laboratory, to interact closely with laboratory staff, to interpret the test results and to authorise final reports. He/she will liaise with the clinical staff about patients, attend ward rounds/specialist MDTs and visit wards to provide clinical consults. He/she will take active part in infection and outbreak control issues. Other duties and opportunities will depend on the interests and abilities of the individual.
