Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) are pleased to offer a joint Vitreoretinal (VR) Fellowship for an experienced VR fellow who wishes to develop subspecialist expertise in paediatric vitreoretinal surgery and complex paediatric retinal disease, set within the context of a broad-based adult VR fellowship at one of the world's leading eye hospitals.

The post will be starting in May 2027.

The successful applicant is required to be registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice. Possession of FRCOphth/MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification is necessary. Applicants should be at Specialist Trainee grade or equivalent and be near to/ completed their higher specialist training in Ophthalmology. You need to evidence significant experience in VR surgery by the time of commencement of the role as you will be required to work independently as well as under supervision and be able to run theatre lists for the service.

Main duties of the job

MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES

• Participation in a 1 in 9 on call rota covering all aspects of Vitreo-Retinal emergency work.
• Undertaking clinic and elective surgery which may include outreach clinics or theatre as part of set timetable.
• Supervision of the work of junior medical staff in the VR Clinic and VR Emergency Clinic and active participation in both formal and informal clinic teaching.
• There will be opportunities for undertaking clinical research.
• To perform lasers for the VR Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Moorfields Eye Hospital (4 days/week)

Independent and supervised management of adult VR patients across outpatient clinics, VR emergency clinic, and operating lists.   Running of VR theatre lists, including complex and emergency vitreoretinal surgery, under appropriate consultant supervision.   Participation in the Moorfields paediatric VR caseload alongside the adult service, including joint  clinics and theatre sessions where paediatric VR cases arise.   Contribution to the VR on-call rota.   Participation in departmental teaching, audit, and research activity.

Great Ormond Street Hospital (1 day/week)

Direct clinical involvement in the paediatric VR and ophthalmic genetics service, including outpatient clinics, ward referrals, and operating sessions as caseload and supervision allow.   Exposure to GOSH’s national retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) surgical service, led by Mr Wong, the principal UK tertiary referral centre for ROP surgery.   Exposure to the multidisciplinary management of inherited retinal dystrophies, paediatric retinal detachment, FEVR, and other complex paediatric vitreoretinal conditions.   Involvement in GOSH's retinal gene therapy programme for inherited retinal disease, led by Mr Henderson, including clinical trial patient pathways, under consultant supervision.   Attendance at relevant GOSH MDTs (e.g. genetics, ophthalmic genomics) as timetabled.   Contribution to GOSH teaching, audit, and research activity relevant to paediatric VR and ophthalmic  genetics.
