Job overview
This post is a continuation of the Imperial JCST Training interface Group (TIG) Fellowship in Hand Surgery, previously included in national selection recruitment. This year the post’s recruitment is through Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. However the day-to-day training within the post will remain the same as in previous years. The Interface Fellow will be expected to continue to use the ISCP website for their electronic portfolio, and the eLogbook to record their operations.
The purpose of this fellowship is to produce hand surgeons who are well versed in the breadth and depth of Hand Surgery. The fellows are expected to gain mutually complementary perspectives and skills from both Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery, in the management of hand and wrist conditions. The fellowship represents the pinnacle of Hand Surgery training in the UK and serves as a training opportunity for future
leaders in the specialty.
JCST Fellowships provide high quality, high prestige and quality assured advanced training in specified clinical areas of practice, that are required by the service but are not trained to unsupervised level by certification. They build on the skills achieved by certification to enable a fellow to contribute unsupervised as a member of the multidisciplinary team to manage patients presenting with the full range of elective and emergency conditions related to the clinical area of practice of the fellowship.
Main duties of the job
ICHNHST offers the full range of medical and surgical care to the local area, as well as specialist Trauma & Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery care to the wider region. Our unit is in a position to offer an unique experience to a senior hand fellow, covering the whole breath of hand and wrist surgery: orthopaedic fixation, reconstruction, microsurgery, tissue transfer and nerve reconstruction, in a well-established, busy unit with close working relationships, strong academic and teaching experience, and a long history of successful fellowships.
We are already experienced in providing post-CCT fellowships in a number of areas across T&O and Plastic Surgery. We have Microvascular, Pelvic, Knee, Hip, Limb Reconstruction, Shoulder & Elbow, and Foot & Ankle post-CCT fellows.
The post will start in August 2026.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post is aimed at highly motivated individuals who want to extend their knowledge, skills and competences in niche areas of Hand Surgery, beyond their parent specialty training. Fellows must be on the Specialist Register and ideally within two years of achieving certification. The 12-month fellowship, focusing on disorders of the hand and wrist, is targeted at surgeons who have completed training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. The fellowship offers 12 months of intensive training and is suitable for candidates who have a demonstrable interest in the specific sub-specialty of Hand Surgery.
This post does not include on-call, but additional on-call shifts can be agreed and funded locally.
