King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH) is recruiting two ICT Technician Apprentices to work within the busy and dynamic ICT department. You will be paid an apprentice rate salary while undergoing training and academic tuition in this full-time on site role.
The successful candidates will assist in the provision of support and maintenance of KCH’s ICT equipment, such as Personal Computers (PC) and telephones, and help ensure that frontline services are delivered in a safe and consistent manner. This could be by visiting users at their workplace at the various hospital sites in south London, over the telephone or by Remote Desktop Connection.
Applicants must have a keen interest in an ICT career and GCSE pass grades (4 to 9 or C to A* in Maths, English and ICT and be able to demonstrate abilities in PC maintenance of both hardware and software. You must demonstrate your interest in this opportunity by describing projects you have undertaken and show a willingness to continue with academic study for the full two-year course. You must also demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding sensitive information.
As this is a Level 3 measured training post, your application will need to demonstrate that you will benefit from significant up-skilling in the apprenticeship and be able to adhere to the Trust’s Values. If you are qualified in ICT, this post may not be suitable for you.
Main duties of the job
There will be a learning Pathway to develop the skills required as follows:
- Provide and receive simple to complex information and give advice over the phone or by remote connection for fault diagnoses, rectification, software upgrade or installation and configuration of PC and telecoms systems;
- Ensure specialist or complex ICT information is analysed, investigated and processed in accordance with policies and procedures and recorded as fault logs within the Service Desk software application;
- Maintain user IT accounts and system rights for networked and clinical systems;
- Reset passwords and transfer/accept accounts for users of NHS Net e-mail;
- Occasionally test and evaluate ICT devices and appliances under the direction of the manager;
- Train and develop own ICT skills through in-house and external training where available and mandatory training;
- Adjust accordingly to variable workloads, interruptions and staff shortages;
- To ensure that appropriate stock levels are maintained;
- Ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) are adhered to;
- Occasionally undertake ICT system testing;
- Assist people to your best ability wherever possible when answering the Service Desk Helpline.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As an apprentice you will learn to deliver support services to the highest standards across all KCH sites. Being adaptable to change is a key attribute for this post and you will be working with a keyboard and physical equipment installations, sometimes in difficult conditions. You will be expected to quickly develop the ability to prioritise your own workload and carry out duties with minimal supervision.
With regular development reviews, training and NHS staff benefits this is an exciting career starting point for anybody looking to move into public sector ICT. Training will be provided both on and off site over a 24-month period by means of a fixed-term contract and there is no guarantee of a permanent contract on completion of the apprenticeship.
The successful applicant will be required to work towards:
- Level 3 ICT Technician Apprentice Qualification, with an external training company.
- Undertake self-directed study for a portfolio and manage own learning time.
- Undertake End Point Assessment tasks which could consist of professional discussion, test, project or observation – this is a Trust provided, externally led assessment determining the successful completion of the apprenticeship.
The apprentice selection process is via an application and interview, most likely via Microsoft TEAMS or possibly at the KCH Denmark Hill site, and a written ICT skills test most likely taken on the same date as the interview. You will be responsible for providing access for yourself to TEAMS or arriving onsite, as appropriate for interview.
Note that the Trust has a no smoking policy and smoking is not allowed on any Trust premises. This includes Vaping.
