The role:
Newborn Hearing Screening is offered to every baby born and the service is provided from within the maternity hospitals seven days a week and at weekly out-patient clinics throughout the area.
A Hearing Screener is required to carry out the hearing screening tests at Princess Royal Maternity in Glasgow (and may be required on occasions to travel to other locations to work.) Hearing Screening is offered to every baby at birth in the maternity hospitals and at outreach clinics. Full training will be provided on Hearing Screening and the associated skills required for the job. No formal qualifications are required but experience of handling small babies, working direct face to face with people in a health care environment and good computer skills, are all essential. If you do not have these skills the application will automatically be rejected. Flexible working, good communication, interpersonal and organisational skills are key qualities required by the successful applicants.
All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Princess Royal Maternity Hospital
- Permanent Contract
- Part-Time Position (20 hours per week)
- Working Pattern for this post are Monday to Sunday. The successful applicant will work daytime hours and will be required to work weekends on a rota basis. The role is 20 hours per week, scheduled over 7 days, with shifts between 8:00am and 4:00pm. The exact shift pattern will be agreed with the successful applicant. The post includes working 3 weekend days across 2 weekends in every 4-week period.
Key responsibilities:
- To identify which babies require screening
- To liaise effectively with parents, team members and other healthcare professionals to ensure screening can be undertaken.
- To carry out the hearing screening of newborn babies within the maternity units and out-reach clinics and accurately record clinical and test data.
- To promote a professional, welcoming and caring environment endorsing a Family Friendly approach.
- To maintain up to date knowledge of procedures and policies relevant to this post i.e. infection control
- To maintain the confidentiality of the babies and their families at all times.
- To ensure the safety and security of equipment at all times and report any problems to the Hearing Screening Co-ordinator at the earliest opportunity.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Essential:
- No formal qualifications are required for the post but evidence of successful study would be desirable
- Previous experience in working within a multidisciplinary health care setting, preferably within a similar environment.
- Previous experience of handling newborn babies.
- Well-developed communication, inter-personal, time management and customer care skills.
- Previous experience of basic computer skills.
- Pleasant and professional approach when carrying out all duties.
- The ability to work on one’s own or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Concern for and understanding of people, and their rights.
- An awareness of both patient confidentiality issues and understanding of health, safety and environment issues in the workplace.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of or an interest in Audiology or Hearing Impairment an advantage.
- Deaf Awareness Training
