An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Support Worker to join our friendly and supportive Gynaecology Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Outpatient team.
Our Gynaecology SDEC is a nurse-led unit, currently co-located with the Discharge Lounge, providing assessment and treatment for women with acute gynaecological conditions. The unit comprises nine treatment chairs/trolleys and two en-suite cubicles for patients requiring assessment, emergency care, or same-day treatment.
As part of our small, dedicated multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in delivering compassionate, high-quality patient care in a busy and rewarding environment. Main duties of the job
The postholder will support the multidisciplinary team in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. Duties include undertaking clinical observations, assisting with examinations and procedures, preparing clinic areas, maintaining equipment and stock, supporting patient flow, and ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. The role also involves providing compassionate support to patients, maintaining accurate documentation, and adhering to infection prevention, safeguarding, and confidentiality standards.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, a caring approach, and the ability to work effectively in a busy clinical environment.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will work as part of the Gynaecology Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Outpatient team, supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care to women attending the service. The post holder will work under the direction of registered nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team, ensuring a high standard of patient care is maintained.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide high-quality, person-centred care while maintaining patients' privacy, dignity and respect at all times.
- Welcome patients to the department and support them throughout their attendance, providing reassurance and responding appropriately to their individual needs.
- Assist registered nurses and clinicians with patient assessment, examinations, investigations and treatments.
- Undertake and accurately record clinical observations, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, height and weight, escalating any concerns promptly.
- Assist with preparing patients for examinations and minor procedures and act as a chaperone in accordance with Trust policy.
- Prepare and maintain clinical areas, ensuring treatment rooms are clean, tidy, well-stocked and ready for use.
- Clean, decontaminate and maintain clinical equipment in accordance with infection prevention and control policies.
- Assist with the collection, labelling and safe handling of specimens.
- Support patient flow through the SDEC and outpatient service, ensuring timely preparation of patients and clinical areas.
- Escort patients to other departments when required.
- Maintain accurate patient records and complete delegated documentation in line with Trust standards.
- Monitor and replenish clinical stock and report equipment faults or shortages promptly.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control, safeguarding, moving and handling, health and safety, and confidentiality policies.
- Recognise and report any deterioration in a patient's condition or concerns regarding patient safety to a registered healthcare professional without delay.
- Provide emotional support to patients and their families, recognising that many women attending the service may be experiencing anxiety, pain, early pregnancy complications or pregnancy loss.
- Work collaboratively with nurses, doctors, sonographers, administrative staff and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care.
- Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement initiatives and service developments where appropriate.
- Attend mandatory training and maintain competencies relevant to the role.
- Participate in appraisal, supervision and continuing professional development, undertaking additional training to develop clinical skills in line with service needs.
- Demonstrate flexibility by working across Gynaecology SDEC and Outpatient services to meet the needs of the department.
