About the Role As a Health Care Support Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting both staff and service users across the ward environments within the Hatherton Centre. Working under the guidance of registered professionals, you will provide high‑quality therapeutic support, contribute to patient safety, and help ensure smooth daily operations. You will be a key member of the team, helping to create a positive, recovery‑focused atmosphere for service users and colleagues. You will need to: Be compassionate, reliable, and self‑motivated Enjoy working as part of a busy and supportive team Have good communication skills and a caring approach Be able to work in challenging environments with resilience and professionalism Ideally have some experience in a health or social care setting (full training will be provided)

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the delivery of high‑quality, person‑centred care within a secure mental health setting. You will spend therapeutic time with service users, assist with meaningful activities, and help promote recovery through evidence‑based interventions. Working under the direction of Registered Professionals, you will contribute to the implementation and evaluation of individualised care plans and provide compassionate support with personal care needs when required. You will communicate effectively with service users, carers and the multi‑disciplinary team, accurately reporting observations and changes in presentation. The role includes maintaining professional boundaries, safeguarding dignity and rights, and promptly reporting risks or concerns. You will help ensure the ward environment remains clean, safe and secure, and support smooth admission, transfer and discharge processes. The post holder will participate in regular supervision, follow all Trust policies and work collaboratively to enhance service quality. Due to the nature of the service, you will be required to work a 24‑hour rotational shift pattern, including nights and weekends.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working with people in a care, support or customer‑facing role.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals who may be distressed or have complex needs.
  • Experience working as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in mental health, secure services or a health/social care environment.
  • Experience supporting individuals with challenging behaviour or severe mental illness.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Good standard of general education. Willingness to complete mandatory training and the Care Certificate.

Desirable

  • Care Certificate achieved. NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care or equivalent.
