Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Head of Hospice Services to join our Hospital. In this role you will exercise overall responsibility for hospice services (inpatient unit, day services, community specialist palliative care team, hospice@home and lymphoedema services and social work and bereavement services) ensuring the delivery of safe outstanding quality care for our community.

Main duties of the job

St Johns Hospice provides a wide range of specialist palliative care and lymphoedema services to patients and families residing in North and West London ICB. The Hospice compromises a 17 bedded Inpatient unit, Wellbeing Centre, Community Specialist Palliative Care service, Hospice@Home service, Lymphoedema service and Social Work and Bereavement service.

About us

In total, the hospice supports approximately 1,500 direct beneficiaries each year and when support to friend and family members is included, the hospice reaches over 4,000 patients and family members each year.

Job responsibilities

  • To work closely with all Heads of Hospice Departments to support them in delivering safe outstanding quality care for our community
  • To be responsible for the safe running of hospice services and cover in the absence of other Hospice Management Team members.
  • To be responsible for workforce management.
  • To lead on all clinical regulatory requirements in conjunction with the Chief Nursing Officer
  • To advise and support staff, demonstrate a high level of competence in the specialty and broaden your remit in line with current evidence-based knowledge and training.
  • To ensure quality assurance within all clinical services.
  • To promote and maintain high quality patient care at all times.
  • To ensure all safety aspects of patient care is maintained.
  • To take overall responsibility for all clinical services.
  • To ensure all staff work in accordance with HJE policies, procedures and protocols.
  • To ensure standards are in place to reflect quality care.
  • To ensure patient safety is key in all aspects of service delivery and is in line with PSIRF.
  • To act as deputy safeguarding lead to ensure robust protection for patients, families, staff and volunteers ensuring clear escalation routes for concerns.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • First Level Registered Nurse
  • Degree/Master level education and post registration qualification(s) in field of expertise.
  • Evidence of further Professional Development
  • Management qualification.
  • Significant experience in a senior nursing role within a palliative care setting
  • Experience of working in or leading community/off site services
  • Experience of managing and influencing standard setting within clinical care
  • Clear and thorough knowledge of the clinical care required for patients within ward areas
  • Experience of working in a ward environment
  • Budget management experience
  • Track record of achievements in clinical care/service management.
  • Experience of managing teams and successfully facilitating change.
  • Clear and thorough knowledge on Nursing/Midwifery issues including statutory frameworks and national policy.
