The Head of Health and Safety will be the lead for Health and Safety and Medical Devices across the Trust, providing expert specialist advice and leadership.  The role is an essential role to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Trust wide expert in Health & Safety overseeing all Trust activity relevant to Health & Safety, Fire Safety and Security. Ensure all health and safety frameworks and systems are in place that will withstand regulatory scrutiny, compliance is monitored and reported and effective remedial actions are implemented.

Be designated Fire Manager for the Trust and contact for all external partners, regulators and agencies for all associated occupational safety activity including inspections.

Implement and oversee the Trust's H&S/Security and Fire Safety work programme and manage the Occupational Safety Team.

Line manage the Medical Devices Safety Officer and oversee the medical devices activity programme for the Trust.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a complex public sector environment
  • Experience of multi-agency working across a range of organisations with competing priorities and needs
  • Experience of managing Health & Safety and Fire Safety in a large multisite organisation
  • Experience of leadership, line management or supervision and performance management.
  • Demonstrate excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Demonstrate credibility in working with and influencing senior staff
  • Working at a senior level.
  • Leading programmes and strategic activity
  • Experience of managing cross organisational projects and programmes through to conclusion.
  • Track record in promoting and implementing change and improvement.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to Masters degree level or equivalent experience
  • NEBOSH Diploma
  • Chartered member of IOSH
  • Willingness to maintain continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Professional courses related to H&S/Fire Safety/Security
  • Healthcare Fire Safety Code Training

Knowledge and expertise

Essential

  • Highly specialist and extensive knowledge Health & Safety, Fire Safety and Security
  • Knowledge of when and how to report serious incidents to the HSE under RIDDOR including appropriate follow up.
  • Robust understanding of the politically sensitive and potentially contentious nature of this role
  • Knowledge and understanding of national frameworks, policies and guidance and how these relate to the NHS
  • Policy and strategy development and its relevance to clinical governance in the NHS
  • Ability to exercise independent and professional judgement across a range of risk areas
  • Able to demonstrate strategic thinking and develop/ formulate long term strategic plans over a number of years
  • Able to communicate effectively with staff at all levels and professions across the organisation
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive, fit for purpose and audience specific reports and briefing papers
  • Ability to prepare and deliver training and presentations on H&S, Fire Safety and Security to staff at all levels with credibility
  • Able to deal with a large and unpredictable workload ensuring key priorities and conflicting deadlines are met through effective time management
