Job summary

TThe Royal Hospital Chelsea is home to the Chelsea Pensioners, retired British Army veterans, and is dedicated to providing care, comradeship and support to those who have served our nation.

Our on-site Medical Centre is a GP practice providing primary care exclusively to the Chelsea Pensioners. We are a small, supportive team that works closely with the Royal Hospital Chelsea's residential care home and colleagues across the site to deliver high-quality, person-centred care.

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will support the clinical team in delivering excellent patient care. Flexibility, teamwork and a willingness to help wherever needed are essential, as every member of our close-knit practice plays an important role.

Please note: Applicants must have previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant in a UK primary care/general practice setting. Applications from candidates without primary care experience will not be considered.

Main duties of the job

Provide high-quality, patient-centred care within a GP practice, supporting the clinical team in delivering primary care services. Undertake delegated clinical duties within your scope of competence, including phlebotomy, NHS health checks, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, height and weight measurements, urinalysis, simple dressings, and other routine clinical procedures. Prepare and maintain clinical rooms, ensure equipment is clean and stocked, accurately record information in the clinical system, and support infection prevention and control standards. Promote patient health and wellbeing, maintain confidentiality at all times, and work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, and the wider practice team to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care.

Job responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertake phlebotomy (venepuncture) and collect patient samples.
  • Assist with wound care and simple dressings (training will be provided if required).
  • Carry out NHS Health Checks and support health promotion.
  • Support the Practice Nurse with long-term condition reviews and delegated clinical tasks.
  • Record clinical observations, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturations, height, weight and BMI.
  • Perform ECGs, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), urinalysis and point-of-care testing, where trained.
  • Administer vaccinations and injections, where appropriately trained and competent.
  • Prepare and maintain clinical rooms, equipment and stock.
  • Maintain accurate patient records using SystmOne.
  • Support GPs and Practice Nurses with clinical procedures and patient care.
  • Promote health and wellbeing through patient education and signposting.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies.
  • Participate in mandatory training, audits and quality improvement activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider practice team to deliver safe, effective and person-centred care.
