An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Tavistock Day Case team as a Band 3 HCA for 20 hours per week Tavistock Hospital is a busy community hospital.  The theatre suite operates Monday to Friday providing surgical day case procedures in a number of specialities.

The theatre team are looking for a motivated, organised individual to join our friendly team. You will work to ensure that patients are admitted, treated and discharged in a timely and efficient manner, making the process as smooth as possible for patients.  This is an exciting time to join a growing department. Previous experience in the  Peri –operative environment is desirable .As a theatre HCA with past experience you will be a crucial member of our team. We offer a comprehensive induction program and structured development. The successful candidates will work as part of the nursing/ODP team to provide high standards of care to ensure a positive experience to all patients.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

• The Health Care Assistant is able to work as part of the Surgical Suite under the direction of the Nurse/ODP assisting in the provision of a high standard of nursing care, advice and information to patients, relatives and carers.  They will participate in clinical areas and processes appropriate to their level of knowledge, experience and skills.

The HCA works as part of the Surgical Suite team under the supervision of registered nurses and ODP’s:-

• Participates in the delivery of patient care
• Contributes towards ward/department organisation
• Supports registered nurses in the provision of a safe and caring environment

The HCA demonstrates a level of skill and understanding which enables them to undertake specific tasks delegated by the nurse in charge and in accordance with relevant procedures, guidelines and policies.  S/he will undertake both routine and specially identified tasks for which they have been trained and assessed as competent.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• 1.      Obtain consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies. 2.      Competently undertake delegated duties in line with patient care plans. 3.      Ability to use your knowledge and experience to undertake non-routine duties and an understanding to take decisions within your area of responsibility. 4.      To carry out a range of (limited) clinical duties with minimal / no supervision, including for example, blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation levels, body temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate, glucose monitoring, collection and testing of urine samples / faecal samples / sputum samples and wound swabs ensuring delivery of high-quality patient care at all times. NB: this list is not exhaustive and will vary depending on area of work. 5.      Participate in patient assessment providing high quality holistic patient care and escalating concerns about patients to other clinical staff. 6.      Practice safe standards of care to patients following Trust guidelines and policies and be able to concentrate for periods throughout the day with occasional interruptions. 7.      Provide clinical care in accordance with the infection prevention and health and safety policies and procedures. 8.      Maintain the work environment in line with Trust infection control and patient safety policies. 9.      Utilising skills to actively facilitate self-care and independence with patients. 10.   Promote health education specific to the clinical area and in line with national and local policies. .
