We are looking to recruit Paediatric Nursing Assistants to join our busy Paediatric team here at Queen Victoria Hospital to help to provide high -quality compassionate care for children and their families.

Main duties of the job

As part of our paediatric team you will be involved in the care of children with minor burn injuries and of children admitted for day surgery procedures.

You will meet and welcome our patients, admit patients to the ward, offer comfort and support to our patients and their families. You will accompany children to the theatre for their operations, comforting their parents alongside the child's care.

You will be involved in distraction and play activities.

You will under supervision monitor a patient through their recovery prior to discharge.

You will use technology to admit patients onto our systems and for booking further appointments.

You will be involved in many elements of children's nursing and surgical care.

You will be involved in continuous quality improvement projects

You will be involved in our paediatric out patient clinics, including phlebotomy, pre-assessment, burn and wound care.

Your role will include the many aspects of HCA work including house keeping and ward preparation, notes and documentation, food preparation and team working.

Accountable to: Chief Nursing Officer

1. Job Summary

1.1 The Clinical Support Worker; Higher Level will work as part of the team with minimal supervision of registered practitioners to provide effective and safe patient centred care with the additional responsibility of undertaking a range of delegated clinical care duties, such as basic observations, blood glucose monitoring, phlebotomy.

1.2 Contribute to the development of the care environment with a positive, professional attitude.

1.3 Contribute to the maintenance of daily provision of service and care to meet the individual needs of patients and department.

1.4 To support the smooth running of the department and ensuring that service users are treated in a friendly and efficient manner.

4.1 Exchange factual information with patients using verbal and non-verbal communication skills to ensure patient understanding

4.2 Assess patient’s health, safety, wellbeing and comfort while undertaking personal care

4.3 Under direction of a registered practitioner, support a comprehensive level of care, maintaining high standards and provide a safe and effective environment for the continuity of care to patients and their relatives/friends/carers.

4.10 Carry out any other duties relevant to the post within own capability such as venepuncture, cannulation, wound assessments, simple dressings, removal of catheters

4.11 Assists with the admission and discharge of patients such as valuables and property

4.12 Assist with eating and drinking in line with care plan from registered professional and completion of relevant documentation

4.13 Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and resources

4.14 Assist to ensure the department is restocked and have shared responsibility for maintaining the cleaning of clinical areas e.g. making beds, cleaning furniture and equipment, and disposal of general waste

4.16 Assist with the provision of the day to day management of clinical equipment and report any problems to senior colleagues, completing the necessary documentation.

4.17 Ensure a safe environment in the department for patients, staff and visitors and inform the Ward/Department manager or Nurse in Charge of potential hazards. Comply with COSHH regulation and other Health and Safety legislation

4.18 Effective communication with colleagues and other members of the MDT

4.19 To ensure patient documentation is factual, timely and accurate in both written and electronic formats

4.20 Ensure patients, visitors and staff are dealt with sensitively and professionally with due regard to ethnic origin, culture, religion, disability and sexual orientation

4.21 To deal with queries and problems from patients and staff, both on the telephone and personally, in a positive and helpful manner and escalate as appropriate

4.22 Support and overcome barriers to understanding using effective communication for patients with physical or mental impairments

4.23 Escalate any concerns about the patient to the relevant practitioner immediately and report on datix

4.24 Instigates emergency procedures as necessary

4.25 Recognition of deteriorating patient and escalation process
