Job overview

The post holder will gain clinical and operative skills under the direct supervision of the consultants on the Upper Limb/Hand & Trauma Team. The post holder will conduct clinics, operating lists, ward rounds and assist with clinical management with the consultants and on behalf of the consultants’ during their absence.

Main duties of the job

With adequate experience, the post holder will be encouraged to undertake additional clinics and operating lists independently.

The objective of the post is to develop from a senior registrar role to a point of overall competence to work in and lead a specialist Hand practice.

The successful applicant will be involved in research activity as part of a national clinical trials programme and the applicant will be given training and guidance to ensure they are competent to take consent for our various projects, collect data, record this appropriately and submit to our grant awarding bodies.

The post holder will also be encouraged to take a leadership role in management and governance in the team with appropriate support.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post is a full-time, fixed – term contract for 12 months.

The post-holder must hold full registration with the General Medical Council.

Salary scale:

Nodal Point 5 local appointment grade code MT05 – with possible on-call commitments.

The post holder must be up to date with all mandatory and statutory training including ATLS.

The appointment will be subject to the Terms and Conditions that mirror the 2018 refresh contract.

Experience

Essential

  • Completion of specialist training in Orthopaedics with certification –
  • Previous Upper Limb / Hand fellowship
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management and evidence-based practice.
  • Understanding of research principles methodology and ethics, with potential to contribute to research
  • Previous research experience with publications
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions and other achievements

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full current GMC registration
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualifications
  • FRCS (T&O) or equivalent
  • Completion of specialist training in Orthopaedic with certification
  • Intention to pursue Upper limb / Hand Orthopaedic surgery as a specialist career
  • Higher degree at MSC or above

Desirable

  • Post CCT
  • Higher surgical degree BSc or other further post graduate qualification
  • MRCS part 1&2

  • Driving Licence - transport

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Sufficient leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to effectively undertake the role in Upper Limb / Hand Surgery in a large teaching hospital.
  • Ability to organise oneself, to manage time and tasks and prioritise clinical needs within limitations of experience.
  • Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate according to level of experience
  • Sound note keeping skills
  • Computing skills: ability to use word processor spreadsheet programme and web browser
  • Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Good spoken and written English. Communications skills should be highly developed.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and participation in audit.
  • Experience of clinical audit
