The post holder will have the opportunity to work with the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust obstetric haematology team and the NIHR Blood Transfusion Research Unit (BTRU)
The obstetric haematology service at GSTT is recognised internationally with renowned expertise in the management of anaemia, immune thrombocytopenia, thrombosis, haemophilia, thrombophilia, myeloproliferative disease and sickle cell disease in pregnancy. The service is for patients who are either pregnant or planning to get pregnant.
The learning opportunities include gaining an understanding of how to develop an obstetric haematology service and the role of haematology in fetal medicine, maternal networks, management of haematological conditions in pregnancy, high-risk pregnancies and rare haematological diseases in pregnancy.
Main duties of the job
- To provide clinical input into the management of patients with obstetric haematology disorders.
- To participate in the review and development of the maternity network regarding haematological disease.
- To contribute to existing haematology pregnancy registries including the UK ITP pregnancy registry and contribute to the develop of new registry projects with the team.
- To promote best practice in patient blood management.
- To be involved in research to improve the management of patients with obstetric haematology disorders.
- To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
- To participate in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management.
- To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
- Participate and integrate in the NIHR BTRU programme of research.
- Plan, manage and conduct an original research project and associated activities, taking direction from their supervisor and other colleagues as appropriate.
- Regularly contribute to or write research articles at an international level for peer reviewed journals, book chapters, and reviews.
- Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups, in accordance with supervisor’s requirements.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of obstetric haematology to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to include:
(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
The post holder will also contribute to publications and be expected to participate in all relevant academic and teaching activities.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
Person specification
IT Literacy
Essential
- High level of computer literacy and highly competent use of windows operating systems and Microsoft office applications.
Medical experience
Essential
- GMC registered medical practitioner or ability to obtain GMC requirements and practice in the UK (please see the general medical Council website for further details).
- Comprehensive clinical experience in Haematology, particularly transfusion medicine.
- Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.
- Previous experience of poor interest in health service research, quality improvement, evidence-based medicine, or working with “big data”.
Desirable
- A medical degree and some specialist experience, typically having obtained MRCP or equivalent, but not CCT or consultant status

- Demonstrate high level of attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and ability to work with people from different backgrounds and levels of seniority.
- Willing to undertake training on data analysis and related AI software.
- Previous experience of maintaining well documented clinical and research records.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to evolving environments.
- Excellent oral and written communications and interpersonal skills.
- Experience of undergraduate teaching and post graduate training
- Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management
Desirable
- Previous experience of poor interest in health service research, quality improvement, evidence-based medicine, or working with “big data”.
- Demonstrating a willingness to keep up-to-date with scientific, clinical and professional issues, in particular relating to developments in the specific subject area
- Previous publications and experiencing giving presentations
- Prior research experience (typically a BSC in a relevant scientific subject or computer science).
- Good understanding of statistical package brackets for example Stata, SPSS, SAS or R).
