We are looking for a talented and creative Graphic Designer to join our award-winning Medical Illustration team at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. This is a 12 month fixed term position, offering an exciting opportunity to contribute to an innovative service as creative healthcare communications continue to develop across the Trust.
Working within a multidisciplinary team of photographers, videographers and designers, you will create high quality visual content that supports patient care, education, communication and service improvement. You will work closely with clinical and non-clinical colleagues to transform complex information into clear, engaging and accessible visual solutions across a range of print and digital formats.

Whether developing patient information, illustrations, presentations, educational resources or digital content, your work will help communicate complex information in ways that are clear, accessible and impactful.

The successful candidate will provide a specialist graphic design service as part of the Medical Illustration team, supporting patient care, education, communication and service improvement across Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

Experience
Essential
- Demonstrate creativity in the interpretation of client briefs.
Desirable
- Experience of producing medical art, illustration or graphic design within a healthcare setting or for a healthcare provider.
- Experience of creating motion graphics or animation for digital media, film or video production.
- Experience of producing accessible visual content across print and digital formats.
- Experience of supporting the development of less experienced staff in medical art, illustration or graphic design.
- Experience of 3D programmes and software, for example ZBrush or Blender.
Personal qualities
Essential
- Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and undertake continuing professional development.
- Able to work in an environment where exposure to potentially upsetting imagery may occur, including injury, disease and the recently bereaved.
Desirable
- Active involvement in a relevant professional body.
Education and qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication or a related creative discipline, or equivalent level of knowledge and experience gained through professional practice.
- You will on occasion be required to travel to other locations in the South West. A full driving licence is therefore essential.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification (e.g. MSc, PGCert) in Medical Art, Medical Visualisation and Human Anatomy or a related discipline.
- Eligible for AHCS registration.
- Willingness to use own car/vehicle.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Essential
- Excellent knowledge of graphic design and illustration practice.
- Good knowledge of current developments and trends in graphic design, illustration and/or Medical Art.
- Excellent IT skills, including experience of Microsoft 365 applications.
- Experience of professional design software, including Adobe Creative Cloud (such as InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop).
- Ability to communicate complex information through clear, accessible and effective visual design.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide and receive complex information from colleagues and clients.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and respond effectively to changing priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload effectively.
- Ability to view high volumes of images using display screens and equipment, requiring a high level of concentration.
- Ability to use professional design software to develop appropriate design solutions and prepare artwork for a range of print and digital outputs.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Physically capable of carrying equipment around the hospital site if required to support other members of staff within Medical Illustration and able to demonstrate a high level of hand-eye coordination.
Desirable
- Excellent knowledge of physiology and anatomy.
- Demonstrate knowledge of other specialties within the profession, including video, photography and print.
- Thorough understanding of consent and confidentiality issues.
