Job summary

PHL Group is seeking experienced General Practitioners (GPs) to join our dedicated Out-of-Hours (OOH) service across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

Working as part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you'll play a vital role in delivering high-quality urgent primary care when patients need it most. Whether providing telephone triage, consulting with patients at one of our seven primary care centres, or undertaking home visits, you'll help ensure patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

About the Role

As an Out-of-Hours GP, you will assess, diagnose and manage a wide range of urgent primary care presentations while working collaboratively with Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Nurses, Paramedics and our wider clinical and operational teams.

You will be responsible for delivering safe, effective and compassionate care, supporting clinical decision-making, maintaining high clinical standards and contributing to the ongoing development of our service.

Service Hours

Our Out-of-Hours service operates:

  • Monday to Friday: 6:30pm 8:00am
  • Weekends and Bank Holidays: 24-hour service (8:00am 8:00am)

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver telephone consultations, face-to-face appointments and home visits.
  • Assess, diagnose and treat patients presenting with urgent primary care needs.
  • Provide emergency care where appropriate while arranging onward transfer.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver outstanding patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records.
  • Support clinical governance, quality improvement and audit activities.
  • Contribute to education, mentoring and the development of colleagues where appropriate.

We are looking for experienced, motivated GPs who are committed to delivering high-quality patient care.

Essential Requirements

  • GMC registered General Practitioner.
  • Included on the NHS Performers List with no restrictions on practice.
  • Minimum of three years' post-CCT experience.
  • Experience working within Urgent Care, Out-of-Hours, Walk-in Centres or Emergency Departments.
  • Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to clinical governance and ongoing professional development.

Job responsibilities

PHL Group are commissioned by Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board to provide out-of-hours (OOH) clinical services across the county of Staffordshire. Our service offering includes telephone triage, home visiting and patients visiting one of our seven primary care centres. These services are delivered between 18:30 08:00 Monday to Friday and from 08:00 08:00 across weekends and bank holidays. Service operating times are variable based on patient demand and access to premises.

The post holder will support the three commissioned services, ensuring they are safe, efficient and patient-focused. They will work closely with the Medical Lead, Clinical Lead and Business Delivery Manager and ensure patients receive optimal care in the correct setting within the healthcare system.

The service is staffed by a team of GPs, Advanced Nurse/Clinical Practitioners, Nurses, Paramedics and a non-clinical workforce.

Clinical Duties

The GP will work with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure appropriate care is delivered in the right place, at the right time. The post holder will be expected to:

Maintain the highest clinical standards for all patients accessing the service.

Elucidate the primary reason for the patients referral or attendance within the OOH service.

Assess and treat patients presenting with clinical needs which can be met by primary care.

Provide emergency care while waiting for emergency transfer of patient when appropriate

Provide advice and support to colleagues and the multi-disciplinary team.

Manage the flow of patients by balancing the clinical need of the patient with the capacity of the provider to deliver the necessary response.

Support both injury and illness pathways.

Maintain contemporaneous medical records for all patients consulted with.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to and support the development of the service. It is expected that the post holder will:

Respond promptly to any requests for statements or reflections on clinical practice to support the investigation of complaints or coroner's requests

Communicate with the Governance Lead and support the delivery of a high-quality service and raise any governance issues that may arise.

Be responsible for the teaching and development of doctors, nurses, and professionals from other disciplines such as Emergency Care Practitioners, GP registrars in Primary Care Skills. This may involve practitioners sitting in and seeing patients where appropriate.

Work with the Medical Lead to ensure training, significant events, complaints, audits, surveys, and other professional service development activities are achieved to ensure the smooth running of the service.

Maintain continued education through attendance at courses and/or study days as necessary to ensure professional development requirements for on-going professional registration and licensing are met.

Participate in, encourage, and support professional development within the service.

Ensure that high clinical standards are maintained throughout the service.

Participate in annual appraisal and complete an annual personal development plan.

Comply with standard operational procedures and departmental and organisational policy.

Undertake necessary mandatory training.

Actively participate in both departmental and organisational matters concerning clinical governance, care pathways, team meetings and audit.

Attend meetings as appropriate to meet the needs of the service and its development.

Experience

Essential

  • Good leadership skills with the ability to influence and negotiate
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, particularly listening skills
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage and prioritise workload effectively
  • Good clinical skills in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute primary care presentations
  • Clear understanding of professional responsibility and accountability

Qualifications

Essential

  • An experienced doctor with GP accreditation
  • Current registration with GMC and NHS performers list with no conditions preventing working or restrictions on practice
  • A minimum of 3 years experience post CCT and experience if working in an urgent care environment such as A&E, Walk-in Centre or an Out-of-Hours service.
  • Experience working with end-of-life/palliative care patients.
  • Record of ongoing CPD and learning
  • MRCGP examination or equivalent experience
  • Sound knowledge of clinical governance
