Consultant in General Internal Medicine working within the Acute Medicine Department
At New Cross Hospital, our Department of Acute Medicine is nationally recognised for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. We combine clinical excellence with a strong commitment to education, innovation, and teamwork, creating an environment where compassionate care thrives.
We are expanding our consultant workforce to meet growing demand and support the continued development of our services and are now looking for consultants in General Internal Medicine to join out team!

Our Acute Medical Unit (AMU)
- Located within the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre
- Purpose-built 49-bed inpatient unit
- Manages an average of 50 medical admissions per day
- Diverse caseload across general and acute medical specialties
- 12 substantive consultant acute physicians providing 7-day cover
Newly Established Medical Same Day Emergency Care Unit
- Located within the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre
- Newly established with opportunities for further development
Multidisciplinary Team & Training
We work closely with a large team of medical staff, including:
- Foundation Year doctors (FY1–FY2)
- Resident doctors from across a range of training cohorts
- Acute Internal Medicine higher specialty trainees
- Clinical Fellows
- Physician Associates
Our structured rota ensures exposure to:
- Clerking and procedural work
- Ambulatory assessment and outpatient management
- Ongoing inpatient care
We also benefit from daily in-reach support from renal medicine, cardiology, respiratory, and gastroenterology.
Education & Development
Our educational programme includes:
- Weekly departmental teaching
- Multidisciplinary in-situ simulation sessions
- Point-of-care ultrasound training
- Supervised trainee-led ward rounds
- MRCP PACES bedside teaching programme
We also offer teaching opportunities for:
- Undergraduate medical students (Years 3 & 5)
- Physician Associates
Quality, Safety & Innovation
We take a proactive approach to patient safety and service development:
- Regular governance meetings
- Robust audit and quality improvement programme
- Active involvement in developing care pathways
- Ongoing expansion of our Medical Same Day Emergency Care unit
