Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Department has developed an indicative job plan to support the recruitment of a Consultant Respiratory Physician with a specialist interest in Lung Cancer and COPD. The post is organised on an 18-week rolling rota, providing a balanced mix of inpatient, outpatient and specialist activity whilst promoting consultant wellbeing through an equitable distribution of clinical commitments. The majority of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) is delivered through the department's Consultant of the Week model, where two Respiratory Consultants provide daily consultant-led ward rounds across the 35-bed Chestnut Respiratory Ward, together with specialist in-reach to the Emergency Department (ED). The role also includes outpatient clinics, specialist services, multidisciplinary team meetings, procedural sessions and participation in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota.
The consultant job plan operates over two alternating weekly schedules within the 18-week rota. Week 1 comprises an average of 7.25 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.25 PAs of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA), whilst Week 2 comprises 7.75 DCC PAs and 1.25 SPA. Both weeks include a predictable allocation of 1.1 PAs for General Internal Medicine (GIM) duties.
The rota has been designed to ensure an equitable distribution of workload, enabling consultants to alternate between ward-based, outpatient and specialist activities, balancing clinical demand while supporting continuity of care and staff wellbeing. These job plans are indicative and based on the current establishment of eight substantive Respiratory Consultants. A personalised job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate. All job plans are reviewed annually in accordance with the Trust's Consultant Job Planning Policy and may be amended by mutual agreement to reflect evolving service needs.
