The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) is seeking an experienced and motivated Group Energy and Carbon Manager to join the Estates Technical Team. This is an excellent opportunity to lead and influence energy, utilities, and carbon reduction activity across a large and diverse estate spanning Salford, Oldham, Bury, Rochdale, and a wide range of community properties.
Working at Group level, you will play a key role in delivering the NCA’s Green Plan and wider sustainability objectives through technical leadership, continuous improvement, and effective change management. You will provide expert advice on energy performance, carbon reduction, compliance, and sustainable estates management, ensuring alignment with relevant legislation, standards, and guidance.
The role requires close collaboration with Estates and Facilities teams, clinical and non-clinical services, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders across the organisation.
We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in energy management, decarbonisation, and sustainability delivery, ideally within a large, complex, multi-site organisation. You will be confident operating at both strategic and operational levels, with a proven track record of improving energy performance, driving innovation, and delivering measurable results in support of Net Zero ambitions.

Main duties of the job
We are looking for an experienced and proactive professional to lead on energy, utilities, and carbon management across the organisation. The role will focus on reducing energy use, improving sustainability, controlling utility costs, and ensuring compliance with energy and environmental legislation. You will help develop and deliver strategies, policies, and improvement plans that support the organisation’s carbon reduction and sustainability goals.
You will be responsible for monitoring energy and water use, managing utility data and reporting, checking invoices, setting budgets and forecasts, and identifying areas where performance can be improved. The role also includes supporting carbon reporting, compliance requirements, energy efficiency projects, renewable energy initiatives, and the effective use of systems such as metering and building management systems. You will also help prepare reports, business cases, and updates for senior managers.
This is a key role that requires persuasive communication and relationship-building skills. You will work closely with Estates teams, senior managers, contractors, suppliers, and external organisations to promote energy efficiency and sustainable working practices. The successful candidate will be confident using data to identify issues, recommend solutions, and support positive change across the organisation.

This is a key strategic and operational role leading the development and delivery of the organisation’s energy, utilities, and carbon reduction agenda across a complex estate. The postholder will be responsible for driving improvements in energy efficiency, sustainability performance, compliance, and cost control, while supporting the organisation’s wider environmental and net zero ambitions. Working across multiple teams and stakeholders, the role will ensure that utility consumption, carbon reporting, energy infrastructure performance, and statutory obligations are effectively managed, monitored, and continuously improved. The postholder will also provide expert advice, develop robust systems and reporting processes, and support the delivery of long-term sustainable estates and facilities objectives.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the development and implementation of energy, utilities, and carbon reduction strategies across the estate.
- Managing compliance with all relevant energy, carbon, and environmental legislation, regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Overseeing utility metering, monitoring, targeting, and reporting systems to improve performance and reduce consumption.
- Preparing and managing energy budgets, forecasts, and utility cost projections, ensuring accurate financial monitoring and reporting.
- Supporting utility procurement, invoice validation, and contract management processes to achieve value for money and cost control.
- Producing high-quality reports, KPIs, forecasts, business cases, board papers, and sustainability updates for senior management.
- Leading the collection, analysis, and interpretation of complex energy, water, and carbon data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Supporting carbon footprint calculations, benchmarking, mandatory reporting, and assurance processes, including compliance schemes and external standards.
- Developing and maintaining systems and processes aligned to recognised standards such as ISO 50001, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001.
- Identifying and delivering energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and cost improvement initiatives across the organisation.
- Promoting the use of renewable and sustainable technologies and supporting opportunities for grant funding and external investment.
- Supporting the efficient performance of key energy infrastructure, including boilers, CHP, biomass, district heating, and renewable energy systems.
- Carrying out site inspections, energy surveys, and performance reviews to identify areas for operational improvement.
- Working collaboratively with Estates teams, senior leaders, contractors, suppliers, and external agencies to embed sustainable working practices.
- Providing expert technical advice, guidance, and support to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Supporting organisational change by promoting innovation, encouraging ownership of actions, and helping teams deliver energy and sustainability improvements.
