We’re excited to offer a role within our Emergency Department, supporting a service that sees around 75,000 patients every year. As a key member of the team, you will provide vital portering, technical and general support to help keep this 24‑hour department running safely and efficiently.
You’ll be trained and supported to undertake a wide range of duties, including assisting with the safe transfer of patients throughout the hospital and helping the team respond to the fast‑moving needs of the department. With average daily attendances of over 200 patients, this role is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
We’re looking for someone who is proactive, calm under pressure and confident working with people from all walks of life. Excellent communication skills and a flexible approach to shift working are essential, as the role covers a 24‑hour rota.

Main duties of the job
- Respond promptly and courteously to all requests from the sister/ charge nurse, or from another member of staff in the Emergency Department.
- Liaise regularly with the operational leaders to ensure the delivery of an efficient, high quality service
- Escort patients and visitors to and from the Emergency Department.
- Move patients by wheelchair, bed or trolley, including movement of the deceased.
- Maintain privacy and dignity of the patient during escort/ transfer.
- To communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, patients, relatives and carers and member of the public.
- To actively promote the Trust values.
- Collect and deliver stores, drugs, medical records, medical gases, beds, equipment, department- based furniture, bloods and specimens as well as other ad- hoc requests
1.9. Carry a pager, operate telephones and respond to emergency alerts including helicopter arrival.
- Assist qualified staff to move patients from/to trolley/bed/ wheelchair
- Carry out regular checks on clinical and technical equipment, to include servicing and repairs as necessary e.g. responsibility for quality control and fault finding on Blood Gas Analysers, undertaking daily checks and rectifying faults, liaising with Haematology where appropriate.
