An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Ophthalmology department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for a locum ED clinical Fellow on an initial 12 month contract to support the Emergency services.
The post holder will work with the current body of ophthalmology consultants at WEH and CXH in the ophthalmology directorate of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
There is a very active research unit: ICORG (Imperial College Ophthalmic Group) which is a part of Imperial College’s department of Cancer & Surgery, and the team are actively participating in a number of phase 1 to phase 4 trials including surgical trials.
The post holder will work with the consultants and allied professionals in the emergency ophthalmology department which offers a 24 hour emergency service, 7 days a week.
The WEH ophthalmic emergency department sees approximately 150 patients per day with inpatient care available for those patients who need admission. The department is staffed with North West London Deanery junior & senior trainees, staff grades, associate specialists & Advanced practitioners. The successful candidate will be expected to train and mentor all members of the team. The department is also supported by an on-call consultant from the North West London hospitals rota & access to all ophthalmic sub specialty expertise is assured.

- The post is 10 Clinical sessions across ED/ Cataract Surgery and general clinics
- Candidate expected to have experience in Emergency ophthalmic and general ophthalmology
- Experience in Cataract surgery

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Provide High Quality Care to Patients in Ophthalmology
- The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration.
- To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
Research, Teaching and Training
- To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director
- Participate in the West London weekly post-graduate ophthalmic teaching.
Performance Management
- To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance.

Medical Staff Management
- To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.
Governance
- To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director
- Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
- To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
- To keep fully informed about best practice in the specialty areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director

Person specification
Clinical Skills
Essential
- slit-lamp examination, dilated fundus examination, gonioscopy awareness, tonometry, interpretation of OCT/fundus imaging and formulation of safe management plans.
- Ability to manage common and sight-threatening emergency ophthalmic conditions.
Desirable
- Evidence of senior fellow / ST5-ST7 level competence or equivalent.
- Ability to contribute to supervision of junior colleagues and support triage or patient-flow decisions.
Procedural skills
Essential
- Competence in core emergency ophthalmology procedures appropriate to training level, with willingness to develop skills under supervision.
- Safe approach to consent, documentation, infection control, escalation and post-procedure safety-netting.
Desirable
- Experience or training in laser retinopexy, corneal scraping, foreign body removal, lid laceration repair, emergency glaucoma treatment, intravitreal treatment pathways, ocular sampling or emergency theatre assistance.
Teaching and Training
Essential
- Ability and willingness to teach medical students, junior doctors, optometrists, nurses and allied health professionals.
Desirable
- Formal teaching qualification, training-the-trainers course, simulation teaching, educational leadership or evidence of regular postgraduate teaching.
Education and Qualifications
Essential
- Medical qualification MBBS or equivalent.
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise. Completed a substantial period of ophthalmology training or equivalent experience, normally at least four years.
- Evidence of continued professional development and mandatory training compliance.
Desirable
- MRCOphth, FRCOphth or equivalent higher qualification.
- Evidence of progress towards CESR/Portfolio application or specialist registration.
Portfolio / consultant-readiness
Essential
- Motivated to develop senior decision-making, leadership, governance and teaching evidence.
- Commitment to maintaining a clinical logbook, reflective practice and workplace-based assessments where applicable.
Desirable
- Actively preparing for consultant applications in General Ophthalmology / Eye Emergency Department or completing CESR/Portfolio evidence.
- Clear career plan and ability to use the fellowship to address portfolio gaps.
Relevant experience in specialty
Essential
- Experience in emergency ophthalmology and general ophthalmology.
- Ability to assess and manage undifferentiated acute ophthalmic presentations with appropriate senior escalation.
- Experience working within a busy ophthalmic service and multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
- Experience in a high-volume Eye Emergency Department or tertiary eye hospital.
- Evidence of managing post-operative complications, ocular trauma and urgent subspecialty presentations.
Communication and patient-focused care
Essential
- Excellent written and spoken English to the standard required for the role.
- Empathy, active listening, clear safety-netting, professional documentation and ability to communicate risk and uncertainty.
Desirable
- Experience managing complaints, complex communication, vulnerable patients, safeguarding concerns or difficult clinical conversations.
Audit, quality improvement and governance
Essential
- Understanding of clinical governance, audit, incident reporting and learning from patient-safety events. Willingness to contribute to local audit, QI and pathway improvement.
Desirable
- Completed audit/QI cycles, guideline development, service-improvement projects or presentations relevant to emergency/general ophthalmology.
Academic Achievements Including Research/Publications
Essential
- Ability to practise evidence-based medicine and engage with departmental educational/research activity.
Desirable
- Publication in a peer-reviewed ophthalmic journal, conference presentation, research involvement or current academic project.
