
Job summary
We are looking for a motivated and patient-focused Dispenser to join our friendly dispensing team. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in supporting the safe and effective delivery of dispensing services within a busy GP practice.
Working closely with GPs, pharmacists and the wider practice team, you will be responsible for dispensing acute and repeat prescriptions, managing dispensary stock, processing prescription requests and providing a professional, efficient service to our patients. You will help ensure medicines are dispensed safely and accurately, maintain high standards of record keeping, and contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the dispensary.
We are looking for someone with excellent attention to detail, strong communication and customer service skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You will be organised, adaptable and committed to delivering high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be responsible for safely dispensing acute and repeat prescriptions, managing medicines stock, processing prescription requests, maintaining accurate dispensing records and providing excellent customer service to patients. Job Purpose
The Dispenser is responsible for providing a safe, accurate and efficient dispensing service to eligible dispensing patients in accordance with NHS regulations, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and practice policies.
Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will dispense medications, manage dispensary stock, process prescription requests, maintain accurate records and deliver excellent customer service. The role requires a high level of accuracy, attention to detail and a commitment to providing high-quality patient care.
Main duties and responsibilities
Dispensing
- Dispense acute and repeat prescriptions safely and accurately in accordance with SOPs.
- Process prescription requests using the practice's clinical systems and the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS).
- Maintain accurate dispensing records, including Controlled Drug (CD) registers where applicable.
- Respond to patient queries and provide clear, professional advice within the scope of the role.
- Ensure prescription charges are collected correctly and declarations are completed where required.
- Prepare prescription forms and associated documentation for submission in line with NHS guidance.
Stock Management
- Receive, check and store medicines in accordance with medicines management guidance.
- Maintain effective stock control to ensure continuity of supply while minimising waste.
- Monitor expiry dates and rotate stock appropriately.
- Ensure medicines, including refrigerated items, are stored safely and temperature records are maintained.
- Support the management of medicines held for off-site clinical use where required.
Administration
- Maintain accurate and confidential records using practice computer systems.
- Process dispensary invoices and correspondence in accordance with practice procedures.
- Handle payments and maintain accurate financial records where required.
Quality and Compliance
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe dispensary environment.
- Ensure compliance with NHS regulations, professional standards and practice policies.
- Follow all Standard Operating Procedures relating to dispensing and medicines management.
- Participate in audits, training and quality improvement initiatives as required.
Team Working
- Work collaboratively with GPs, pharmacists, nurses and the wider practice team.
- Support colleagues during periods of increased workload.
- Promote a positive, respectful and professional working environment.
- Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role as reasonably requested by the Practice.
