We have an exciting, 18-month fixed-term opportunity for a midwife to join the Safeguarding Service (for 15 hours per week) in South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Trust as Deputy Named Midwife for Safeguarding. You will work with the Named Midwife for Safeguarding and the named professionals and wider teams, within Safeguarding Services.
You will be a highly-visible and family-focused support to the Named Midwife for Safeguarding and will develop a sound understanding of issues relating to safeguarding within Maternity and the wider safeguarding services, to seek to gain expert knowledge around the statutory requirements within the Law.
You will support the Named Midwife to manage and co-ordinate the safeguarding activities of midwives and other members of the multidisciplinary Team in all areas of Maternity services, providing support and expert clinical advice.
The Base will be Durham Road Children Centre but there will be a requirement to work into all Trust sites.
The hours will be flexible to meet the needs of the Service, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, ensuring five-day cover between the Named Midwife and this Post.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Named Midwife for Safeguarding will act as operational support for the Named Midwife, supporting service users and staff in both the hospital and community setting. You will support the duties of the Named Midwife for Safeguarding and deputise in their absence.
You will provide midwifery expertise and expert knowledge in safeguarding and child protection throughout the pregnancy pathway, ensuring safe, effective, evidence-based clinical practice in accordance with Working Together to Safeguard Children (2026), National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance and the Trusts guidelines and policies.
You will actively participate in the education, training and dissemination of professional and clinical knowledge relating to Safeguarding to colleagues, student midwives and other members of the multi-disciplinary team acting as an effective role model.

Essential
- Significant post-qualification experience in maternity care.
- Experience working in the area of safeguarding and multi-agency work.
- Practice Supervisor / Assessor of recent evidence of having facilitated learning in practice.
- Demonstrates evidence of well-developed clinical practice.
- Experience of leading a team or project.
- Audit and research experience.
- Evidence of innovation in practice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of current developments and legislation in safeguarding.
- Understand, encourage and support safeguarding supervision.
- Evidence of MDT and multi-agency working.
- Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
Desirable
- Significant and wide experience of working within the hospital and community setting.
- Evidence of teaching in safeguarding.
Qualifications
Essential
- Active professional registration with NMC as a Midwife.
- Degree in health-related subject.
- Evidence of CPD.
Desirable
- Management and or leadership qualification.
- Teaching or equivalent qualification.
- Safeguarding supervision or Counselling course.

- Moving and Handling.
- Ability to sit at workstations as necessary to perform the Post.

- High level of presentation / facilitation skills (for single and multi-agency) in order to present highly-complex and sensitive information to large groups of people through training, briefings and conferences.
- Ability to develop protocols and guidelines.
- Ability to write reports for senior management.
- Work under own initiative with strong organisational skills and work to deadlines.
- Able to use problem-solving skills.
- Diplomacy and negotiation skills.
- Competent in the use of IT software packages.
- Up-to-date knowledge in safeguarding , using information to affect change in practice and ensuring effective dissemination of new knowledge.
- Maintain a high level of knowledge and understanding of child and adult law, MCA, national and local policies and procedures, inter-agency roles and responsibilities, theoretical framework patterns and indicators of abuse.
- Evidence of providing education to staff, patients and carers as appropriate to individual need.
- Experience of working with adults, children and families.
- Ability to negotiate a resolution where there are conflicting opinions.
- Understanding of the wider NHS and local agenda.
