Job overview
Working closely with, and reporting directly to, the Chief Medical Officer, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) will help to deliver the Chief Medical Officer’s extensive portfolio.
This will include, but not be limited to, providing visible professional medical leadership across Sherwood Forest Hospitals and supporting the Divisional Clinical Directors, divisional triumvirates and Heads of Service in matters relevant to patient safety, patient experience and the quality agenda, while ensuring the best use of scarce resources. The post-holder will model inclusive leadership and actively contribute to a culture of belonging, psychological safety and equity of opportunity across the medical workforce.
The role will include guiding the CMO’s Office in strategic and operational decision-making, deputising at Board and sub-Board level, and chairing various committees linked to the CMO’s portfolio and the strategic direction of the Trust.
There will be an opportunity to discuss the composition of the portfolio following the appointment, depending on the successful candidate’s experience and professional development needs. The work of the CMO’s Office is under ongoing review as the portfolio evolves. This may require changes to the successful candidate’s portfolio over time.
Main duties of the job
- Provide senior medical leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe and effective patient care across the Trust services.
- Lead and strengthen Trust-wide quality improvement activity, with a focus on patient safety, clinical outcomes and patient experience.
- Provide executive oversight of clinical governance arrangements, including incident management, learning from deaths, complaints handling and serious incident processes.

- Chair or deputise for relevant Trust committees and forums linked to the Chief Medical Officer’s portfolio. This includes chairing the Radiation Safety Committee and the Learning from Deaths forum.
- Ensure compliance with Caldicott principles, safeguarding duties and relevant regulatory frameworks.
