The role of the Deputy Charge Nurse within the Emergency Department is key to ensuring the safe care of patients attending the UCH as emergencies. When in charge, you will be responsible for ensuring the management and supervision of the nursing staff in within the ED during your shift along with the Consultant in Charge of the department. You will assist the Senior Nurse and Charge Nurses in leading the nursing staff in ensuring quality of care and meeting and sustaining performance against the Care Quality Indicators ( CQI’s) for Emergency Services You will assist the Senior Nurse and Charge Nurses to ensure the educational needs of the ED are met. . In the event of a major incident (MAJAX) you will be responsible for assisting in the co-ordination of the ED response.

  • Professional Conduct: Work according to the NMC Code and relevant guidelines as a named nurse, ensuring high standards of patient care, assessing nursing and health education needs, and managing care programs, including discharge planning. 2.    Ward Management: Act as a deputy for ward organization and management, developing skills in ward/department management and providing leadership in the absence of the senior sister/charge nurse. 3.    Strategy Implementation: Promote and implement UCLH Nursing & Midwifery strategy and Core Standards, contributing to the Trust’s “Top 10” Objectives. 4.    Quality Initiatives: Develop and implement Audit, Quality, and Risk Management initiatives. 5.    Teaching and Mentoring: Teach, facilitate, mentor, and precept student nurses, participating in clinical supervision programs. Key Working Relationships Work alongside Band 6.5 and Band 7 nurses, supported by a Band 7 Team Leader, Matron, and Senior Nurses. Manage a team of Band 3 Nursing Assistants and Band 5 and 6 nurses. Collaborate with the clinical practice facilitator team for staff training and development. Build relationships with the ED medical team, management team, and senior operations team. Key Results Areas •    Communication: Maintain effective communication, convey complex information, ensure patient documentation accuracy, provide health information, and maintain confidentiality. •    Personal and People Development: Educate patients and carers, participate in appraisals and staff development, and act as a preceptor/mentor for staff and students. •    Health, Safety, and Security: Ensure a safe environment, adhere to Trust policies, manage risks, and ensure safe drug custody and administration. •    Service Improvement: Develop and monitor nursing practice standards, deliver evidence-based care, and contribute to research and development programs. •    Quality: Maintain a safe, welcoming environment, participate in quality audits, and handle complaints per UCLH policy. •    Equality and Diversity: Act in accordance with the Trust’s Equal Opportunity policy, respecting diversity and individual preferences. •    Care Planning: Ensure appropriate patient care plans, coordinate discharge arrangements, and supervise junior staff. •    Information Processing: Use electronic patient records and ensure accurate data collection. •    Learning and Development: Assist with staff induction, establish clinical supervision, and contribute to a learning environment. •    Financial Management: Manage resources effectively, ensuring appropriate staffing and prudent use of bank and agency staff. •    People Management: Provide nursing leadership, supervise team members, develop management skills, participate in recruitment and appraisal processes, and monitor performance.
