Job overview

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust seek to appoint a dynamic Consultant Urological Surgeon to complement our friendly and supportive team of 16 existing consultants. As the department has evolved with increased sub-specialisation, we are specifically seeking a colleague to contribute to and advance our robotic oncology workload. This role offers an excellent opportunity to join a well-established and collaborative urology service.

Main duties of the job

This post has arisen from one of our surgeons taking partial retirement and also as expansion of our robotic oncology team

You will supervise and train urology higher surgical trainees, CT and FY doctors, and provide post and undergraduate teaching. You will be expected to take part in appropriate local and national audits of surgical outcomes, and to submit data to the National Audit and BAUS Complex Operations database. You will be involved with urological research, and will be encouraged to develop this, and expand the department’s publications and research portfolio.

The appointee will also be expected to take part in the emergency urology on call rota; currently this is 1:15. The service operates a consultant of the week (CoW) emergency cover model to provide a 7-day emergency service.

CoW cover is divided into two blocks, Monday to Thursday and Friday to Sunday.  Elective activities are cancelled when assigned to CoW duties.  The CoW will also cover post-op patients if the operating surgeon is off site or on leave.

Paediatric Urology emergencies for children under the age of 2 are automatically sent to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and emergencies for children over the age of 2 i.e. torsion etc are dealt with by the service. There is also cover of adult emergencies on the Walsall site.

Mentoring arrangements are available in the Trust to all newly appointed consultants with a senior clinician provided to support the successful candidate.
