Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Christie Urology team, providing world class Urological cancer care across Greater Manchester and beyond. This post is for a Urological Surgeon with a specialist interest in robotic prostate cancer surgery, helping to develop and expand the Christie regional prostate cancer service.
The post also offers an exciting opportunity to be part of the regional complex pelvic cancer service, providing urological expertise to the minimally invasive and open surgical management of complex cases.
Main duties of the job
A successful candidate will be an integral member of the prostate cancer MDT, offering robotic surgical management for prostate cancer patients across Greater Manchester. They will have the opportunity to develop new and novel techniques for the management of prostate cancer and will have the chance to participate in wide -ranging research programmes. Outpatient clinics will be provided at the main Christie site as well as at satellite services as part of the Christie’s commitment to proving care closer to home.
The post holder with also provide support to the multi-disciplinary complex pelvic surgical team, providing urological input to the assessment, planning and delivery of complex multi-visceral resection surgery.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The medical establishment provides the following staff within the urology department:
- Ten Consultant urologists (2 on SLA contracts with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust from Northern Care Alliance and Manchester NHS Foundation Trust)
- Seven Uro-Oncology specialist nurses and one ANP
- Five Middle grades (2 Specialist trainees, 3 Clinical/Research Fellows plus visiting International Fellows)
- Five Secretaries
The appointee will be based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Withington, Manchester, although he/she may be required to provide an outreach clinic at other partner sites within the Greater Manchester area. consultant will also provide senior input to the management of patients with prostate cancer. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Job Planning The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May – September). It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle.
The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. The consultant job plan will include a combination of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) delivered across the 7‑day week.
Weekend working will consist of programmed clinical activities that are job‑planned, scheduled in advance, and reviewed annually through the job planning process.
The pattern and timing of weekday and weekend programmed activities will be agreed on appointment and subsequently reviewed through the annual job planning cycle, taking account of service needs and consultant preferences.
Essential Training/Mandatory Training To ensure you maintain safe practice and understand Trust requirements, you must ensure your essential/mandatory training modules are maintained at all times using allocated core SPA time to complete them.
On call Commitments This role does require participation in the on-call rota, currently on a 1:7 non-resident basis though this is dependent on unit needs
