Job overview
If successful, you will join an enthusiastic and experienced stroke multidisciplinary team as a Consultant in Stroke Medicine.
Our service admits around 800 confirmed stroke patients each year. An out-of-hours thrombolysis service is provided in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH).
A high-risk TIA service operates 5 days a week with same-day carotid Doppler and MRI imaging, enabling carotid endarterectomy within 48 hours when required. Weekend cover is provided by NUH.
At Kings Mill Hospital, Ward 54 provides hyper-acute, acute and stroke care. Six monitored beds form the hyper-acute bay, supported by NIHSS-certified senior stroke nurses available 24/7 to admit patients directly from A&E and assess thrombolysis candidates. A further 14 beds support acute stroke management and rehabilitation, including a therapy area.
Inpatient rehabilitation is provided at Chatsworth Stroke Rehabilitation Unit on the Mansfield Community Hospital site, one mile from Kings Mill Hospital. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and clinical psychology services are available 5 days a week. An activity coordinator provides social activities, including lunch and film clubs.
The Integrated Community Stroke Service (ICSS) delivers intensive community rehabilitation. Supported by therapy, nursing and rehabilitation staff, the service receives around 40% of patients discharged from the stroke unit.
Main duties of the job
Depending on the skills of the successful candidate an opportunity exists to take part in the acute medical on-call.
