NHS Ayrshire and is making a significant investment in radiological services as part of a programme of improvement supporting the redesign of "front door" emergency services and delivery of the 18 weeks referral to treatment standard. The aim is to enhance local service infrastructure to deliver timely and integrated radiological support to clinical teams. Two Consultant radiologist posts are offered in NHS Ayrshire and Arran.

The successful candidates will be encouraged to take on a Specialist Interest(s) which complements the existing department. Sub-speciality interest in Musculoskeletal Radiology, Breast Radiology and Urology will be welcome.

The imaging departments at both University Hospitals Crosshouse and Ayr are well equipped each having a 1.5T MR scanner, 128 slice CT, Ultrasound, Digital Fluoroscopy, Nuclear Medicine and Mammography. Both hospitals utilise the national PACS system along with the RIS Web radiology ordering system. Teleradiology is available for on-call CT. The directorate has been proactive in reviewing skill mix and developing extended radiographer roles.

There are excellent on-site educational and library facilities. The hospitals receive trainees from the West of Scotland Radiology Training Scheme. Ayrshire is one of the most scenic regions of with excellent recreational facilities first class transport links and offers excellent housing and schooling and serves a population of 375000. Services are delivered from two linked District General Hospitals Crosshouse (539 beds) and (353 beds) within a single medical imaging directorate.

The successful applicants will join the existing complement of 26 Radiologists in Ayrshire. At present each hospital operates its own on-call rota at the weekend and combined on-call rota at the weekdays. The delivery of the on-call service is currently under review. There is a well-established outsourcing for overnight on-call work to a nighthawk service.

The Terms and Conditions of Service are those determined by the new Consultant Contract () 2004 and are offered on a 10 programmed activity basis. Applications from individuals who may wish to work on a part-time or job share basis will be considered. Extended day and flexible family friendly working patterns will be considered where feasible. Opportunities may exist for Extra Programmed Activities subject to service requirements.

The successful applicants should possess the FRCR (or equivalent). Applicants must have Full GMC Registration with a current Licence to Practice and must be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT or a CESR at the time of interview for the post.
