This is an opportunity for a consultant Psychiatrist who will be responsible for providing clinical input & leadership to the North-West Perinatal Mental Health team based at Unither House & will work alongside a multidisciplinary team in line with new ways of Working.

The Perinatal Mental Health Service provides a multidisciplinary, comprehensive community specialist service for assessing & treating women with psychosis and other severe mental illnesses in pregnancy & postnatally across the county of Surrey. We ensure that care provided aligns with the vision & values of the patient service centred, compassionate, high-quality, focussed on the needs of the woman, the baby & the wider family, facilitating shared decision-making at all times.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will share responsibility with other consultant perinatal psychiatrists for providing high-quality clinical care across the perinatal service. This includes assessments of women’s mental health & mother-infant relationships & related risks, bio-psycho-social diagnostic formulations, exploration of prevention, treatment & care options, clear communication & shared decision-making with patients (& families as appropriate), communication & joint planning with other professionals & agencies by the most effective means, use of proper legal statutes & powers where necessary for good patient care.

Provide regular clinical supervision to junior doctors working or training in the service & clinical advice & information as & when required to all staff and to participate in the on-call rota with other Consultant staff as agreed in the job plan.

  • NHS Consultant grade £113,565 - £150,569 per annum + £149 fringe + on- call requirement

Eligibility

Essential

  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.

Desirable

  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within three months of appointment

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full medical registration with a license to practice.
  • Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act(or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent
  • MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

Essential

  • Ability to take a clinical leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high- quality care.
  • Skills and sensitivity in negotiating with patients, relatives, and other professionals where opinions differ.
  • A high-level ability to effectively communicate complex and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers, and a wide range of lay and professional people within and outside the NHS at both written and oral levels.

Desirable

  • Ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice.
  • Knowledge of NHS strategic vision in the Next Stage Review (High-Quality Care for All)
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Experience working with various patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity across different care settings, including community, inpatient, and Specialty teams.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric provision

Desirable

  • Published audit or research projects
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
  • Experience in management
  • Specific training qualification/certificate or attendance on a recognised teaching course.
  • Peer review or research publications
