Consultant Psychiatrist in the Rapid Assessment Psychosis Team

Job overview

This is a new post created as part of Oxleas Trust redesign of the community psychosis pathway. This has partly been driven by the events in Nottingham in June 2023, and a desire for the Trust to be able to deliver a more assertive, flexible and evidenced care pathway for patients with psychosis. Oxleas has excellent Early Intervention in Psychosis Teams delivering care for first episode patients from age 18-65 with a team based in each Borough. These have typically been rated as good or excellent in the annual NCAP audit.

Main duties of the job

The team has a full time band 7 and a full time band 6. The main function of these staff is to provide daily assessments. The team will have support from 2 days of a higher trainee and possibly a day from a GP trainee, which will most likely be a physical health clinic where patients may need blood tests or an ECG prior to resuming medication. These 2 junior medical posts will be shared with the Greenwich EIP team. The team will have admin support.

The team will overall have line managerial support from a Trust-wide band 8 post and within each Borough there will be senior pathway lead roles. Key relationships within the team will be with our Borough based EIP teams and the clinical and operational leads in the new Community Psychosis Teams. The team will need to work collaboratively with our existing Hubs and also colleagues within our crisis pathway when admission, Home Treatment or MHA assessment are required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties of post holder

• Provide an assessment, diagnosis and initial treatment plan for people referred to RAPT. To develop a bio-psycho-social formulation and to try and understand the reason for the referral/relapse 2. To be flexible in how these assessments are delivered across Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich. Face to face assessment will be the default with video and ‘phone being used as an adjunct. 3. To work with colleagues in the Acute Directorate and the AMHP teams when the crisis cannot be managed within RAPT and more intensive/urgent treatment is required. 4. Provide contemporaneous documentation in Rio. This may include assessment tools which will be developed by the team. To make an initial care plan. 5. Work collaboratively with the higher trainee, GP Resident and other team members to ensure a fair workload for all, with time for reflection, supervision and case discussion. 6. To support the team administrators (deciding upon onward referrals, timely completion of GP letters) 7. Participate in MDT meetings and contribute to the daily huddle/referrals meeting 8. Provide Educational supervision to the higher trainee 9. Act and practice in accordance with the General Medical Council and Royal College of Psychiatrists standards of conduct, ethics, and performance. 10. Actively communicate with clinical and operational staff across all 3 Oxleas Boroughs to assist service delivery. 11. To ensure the safety of patients, including safety netting advice and reporting all incidents. To have a good knowledge of safeguarding policies. 12. To fully understand the business continuity management system and your role in implementing its process
