Job overview

This is a 6 PA substantive Consultant Psychiatrist in Community Old Age Psychiatry: Newcastle North OAP CTT.

This service operates at the St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth, There are close links with the other Newcastle older adults’ community mental health teams and inpatient services, as well as the large all-age liaison psychiatry services at RVI, and the Universal Crisis team.

You will join an experienced and well-established OAP CTT service which provides assessment and treatment for older adults with both functional and organic mental illnesses.

You will join a skilled multi-disciplinary (MDT) workforce, including Consultant colleagues, Specialty doctor, resident doctors, non-medical prescribers, Nursing colleagues, Psychologist and Occupational therapist.

As a Consultant, you will know what it means achieve this by leading a team. Striving for a better service leads to a better you.

Working 6 PAs a week over 3 days alongside the multidisciplinary team, including SAS doctors, resident doctors, and wider clinical team, you will be the clinical expert from a medical perspective to ensure best practice care is delivered and support the team.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will participate in the engagement, assessment, diagnosis and formulation of patients referred to the Newcastle North Older persons CMHT
  • To provide medical leadership, consultation, advice and guidance within the CMHT, ensuring that care and treatment are safe, effective efficient and within national guidelines.
  • To provide medical assessment, diagnosis and formulation to appropriate patients. On completion of assessment, advice on diagnosis and treatment within the team and to external service providers.
  • To provide medical care to patients with severe mental health problems requiring enhanced care coordination.
  • To liaise, advise and consult with hospital doctors and primary care clinicians on diagnosis, treatment and management of patients.
  • To make assessments and recommendations under the Mental Health Act.
  • To train and supervise trainee medical staff, including medical students and other allied professionals.
  • To contribute to the ongoing training and development programmed within the CMHT and primary care.
  • To lead and advise on research and audit projects in the team, where appropriate, in conjunction with other team members in line with the clinical governance agenda.
  • To act as Lead professional for an appropriate caseload of patients outside care coordination arrangements, where the ongoing input required is solely medical.
  • To provide (or ensure referral to the appropriate service for provision of) up to date evidence based interventions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a replacement post (6 PA) Consultant post where you will provide senior medical input into a Community Mental Health Team covering the older adult population of the Newcastle North locality. Other Consultants are currently covering this vacancy using additional PAs.

The potholder will be working alongside the other Older person’s Consultant Psychiatrists in the OAP CTT in Newcastle East, West and N Tyneside localities, as well as the Older Person’s Consultants in the MAMS, Day Hospital and Behaviour Support teams.

Skills

Essential

  • High level of clinical skills
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders in Adult Psychiatry
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent teaching skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a time efficient manner

Desirable

  • Established record of clinical leadership
  • Established ability as a clinical teacher
  • Training in specific and relevant treatment skills eg a brief form of psychological therapy.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Up to date knowledge in the field of Psychiatry
  • Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation

Desirable

  • An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Wide clinical experience in general adult psychiatry in different clinical settings
  • Experience of Clinical Audit

Desirable

  • Experience in multiagency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
  • Experience in service management or development

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
  • Approved under Section12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Approved Clinician Status

Desirable

  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
  • Has undergone training in educational supervision
  • Has undergone training in appraisal
