We are seeking a dedicated Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our award-winning Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Service at BHRUT. This is an exceptional opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of patients and families while working within a CQC Outstanding-rated end of life care service.

Our service covers two acute hospital sites - Queen's Hospital in Romford (CQC Outstanding for end of life care) and King George Hospital in Ilford (CQC Good for end of life care) - serving a diverse population of over 840,000 people across Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge, and Brentwood.

Collaborative Partnerships: Work closely with Saint Francis Hospice (CQC Outstanding), community palliative care teams, and be part of innovative partnership models across North East London.

Professional Development: Access to regional consultant networks, monthly partnership meetings, quarterly CPD forums, and opportunities to contribute to strategic service development.

Main duties of the job

As our new Consultant, you will:

  • Provide specialist clinical care to adult patients with life-limiting illnesses across both malignant and non-malignant conditions
  • Lead and support colleagues through clinical advice, education, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Join our 24/7 consultant on-call rota providing telephone support to trust staff
  • Work collaboratively with our established multidisciplinary team handling over 2,000 referrals annually
  • Contribute to education and training including mandatory EOLC training, medical student teaching, and our popular educational podcast series
  • Support service development aligned with national End of Life Care ambitions and our new BHRUT EOLC Strategy

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Essential Requirements:

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • CCT in Palliative Medicine or equivalent, or within 6 months of CCT
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, person-centred care
  • Experience in acute hospital palliative care
  • Strong communication and teaching skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams

Desirable:

  • Experience in service development and quality improvement
  • Interest in education and training
  • Knowledge of Electronic Palliative Care Coordination Systems
