Job overview

The Paediatric diabetes service at BHRUT NHS Trust is one of the busiest in London and the Southeast treating over 400 children. We are part of the Northeast Thames Diabetes network.

Applications are invited for the post of a Consultant Paediatrician with a special interest in Diabetes and Endocrinology. We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated colleague to join our established team of paediatricians.

The successful applicant will be responsible for jointly running the diabetes and endocrine service at BHRUT with the three existing consultants, paediatric diabetes speciality doctor, paediatric diabetes specialist nurses, dietitians and the other members of the paediatric diabetes team. In addition to the diabetes and endocrine commitments, the successful candidate will also work as an acute general paediatric consultant

We will be looking for someone with diabetes experience and ideally SPIN (not essential, can be supported in post) and endocrine experience to join our team.

Main duties of the job

Weekly MDT Clinics run at Queens Hospital, and we use web platforms to upload blood glucose data and point of care HbA1C testing in clinic. The team uses the Twinkle database for collecting data on service delivery and outcome.

Other features of the paediatric diabetes service include:

  • Weekly pump clinics and 2 weekly pump starts
  • Monthly transition clinic with adult diabetes team
  • Monthly MDT meetings
  • Carb counting workshops
  • Quarterly newsletter for families/team members
  • Social events during school holidays for families and team (e.g. walk, sports events, picnics)
  • We have completed the Diabetes Quality Programme commissioned by RCPCH.
  • We are part of NEL CYP Diabetes network
  • We were successful with our bid from NHSE to become a pilot site for improving diabetes technology uptake for CYP from deprived communities.
  • Actively involved in National Paediatric Diabetes Audit

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will take an important role in providing transition care for CYP and for those with Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. She/he will be responsible with his/her colleagues for seeing the patients newly diagnosed with diabetes and helping the children/adolescents and their families with education and support both in clinic and outside clinic. The successful applicant will also assist with her/his colleagues in providing any necessary advice to the children's wards when children/adolescents already known to have diabetes are admitted for diabetes related or other non-diabetes related reasons.
