Job overview

This post is being advertised pending Royal College Approval

We are offering an exciting and new opportunity as a GMC Registered Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry to join our newly developed Older Adult Outreach service based at St George’s Hospital, Stafford, Staffordshire.

The Outreach Service is a new service that offers home treatment support to patients with both Dementia and Older Adults with Mental health conditions in the South Staffordshire locality. The Outreach service provides short term additional intervention and mental health support to older adults who are known to the Community Mental Health teams but are requiring an enhanced service at that time. The team also facilitates timely discharge from the inpatient Older Adult wards.

This post offers Consultant Psychiatrist level support to this team and will also offer Consultant Psychiatrist level support and supervision to the functional and organic assessment wards at St Georges Hospital. Both inpatient units have Nurse consultants who lead the ward teams and hold Responsible Clinician responsibility.

You will provide clinical leadership to the teams as part of a collective leadership structure and provide support and supervision to The Nurse Consultants, NMP, ACP and Medical Trainees. There are also funds to recruit a Specialty Doctor to support the Outreach service.

Main duties of the job

As Consultant in Older Psychiatry, you will provide medical leadership within a collective leadership model and will offer Consultant input into community care and treatment within the Older Adult Outreach team, with the facility for rapid assessment of referred patients, flexible review of complex patients and timely step-down of care back to the Community Mental Health Team. Service users will present with a range of mental health difficulties, including dementia.

The Consultant Psychiatrist is not expected to be the key worker for service users and will not carry an independent caseload. The team caseload is currently 44 patients, but it is anticipated this could be up to approximately 60-70 patients at any one time. This caseload is regularly reviewed in supervision and will also annually be reviewed as part of the Consultants job plan.
