EPUT is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and passionate Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to provide medical leadership for the Tower ward in Clacton which is a 14 bedded dementia ward. The ward has good resident doctor and SAS support and well as a comprehensive MDT. The post will also incorporate a session of memory clinic with MDT discussion for the Clacton area only based at Landermere Centre in Clacton.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to work closely with the ward managers and the wider MDT to provide a safe and effective service and also be expected to work closely with the relevant community teams and contribute to providing an effective care pathway for patients across the service.
The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients under their care on Tower Ward for patients detained under the Mental Health Act and expected to carry out the duties expected of an RC knowledgably and in a timely manner. The post holder will be expected to be knowledgeable of the Mental Capacity Act and be proficient at applying it appropriately to patient care.
You must have full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register, with an appropriate CCT or equivalent or be within six months of obtaining your CCT on the date of the AAC.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Consultant Psychiatrist is a key clinical leader for the Team. The post-holder is required to work independently and accountably as part of a team of clinicians offering Mental Health Services. Working collaboratively with key partner organisations, service users, carers, clinicians, and other practitioners within the multi-disciplinary team in delivering great mental health services. The post holder would be part of the senior management team of the team and be integral in developing and improving the service.

The post holder will: Work in accordance with the New Ways of Working initiative for Consultants, attend regular team meetings such as MDT meetings and formulation meetings to discuss clinical issues with team members, care coordinators, inpatient doctors, and other statutory agencies as required for the care of patients.
- Work closely with other consultant colleagues to ensure that the patient journey is as smooth as possible.
- Provide clinical leadership and actively liaise with general practitioners, psychiatrists, and other hospital specialists, statutory and non-statutory agencies, whenever relevant to the care and treatment of patients.
- Be committed to a multidisciplinary approach to care.
- Use evidence-based interventions at all times.
- Offer a consistent response to referrers/service users regardless of origin of the referral in a timely fashion.
- Offer an accurate diagnosis and timely interventions so that intensive treatment can be delivered to present chronicity and dependency on psychiatric services, in accordance with the recovery model.
- Attend Mental Health Act assessments as requested for relevant patients.
- Act as the Responsible Clinician for inpatients including attending Tribunals, as necessary.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of care programmes for patients.
- Supervise junior and middle grade doctors in the team.
- Participate in the teaching programmes of the multidisciplinary team.
- Contribute to the collection of clinical information to ensure further service development and to enable audit.
- Work closely with consultant colleagues to contribute to the provision of appropriate Consultant cover for daytime, 9 am to 5 pm, (working days) and for periods of annual/study/special leave.
- Participate in the on-call Consultant Rota primarily for advice; Consultants are on the 3rd Tier of on call.
- Participate in clinical governance and teaching activities.
- Contribute to the day-to-day management and to the overall service development agenda through appropriate involvement with managerial and clinical colleagues.
- Undergo annual appraisal and fulfil the requirements of continuing professional development (CPD) in order to meet the criteria for revalidation by the General Medical Council.
- Agree a job plan with the Clinical Director.
- Attend Trust Wide Medical Staffing Committee and other Management forums.
