Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week post based in St Johns Hospital ( The post may involve sessions at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary)

This is a substantive consultant post in obstetrics and gynaecology. The successful applicant should be able to contribute to both Obstetrics and Gynaecology, they must be able to work flexibly to address service pressures and priorities as they arise in either area.

The post will include consultant sessions on labour ward, a hot week of ward cover and emergency gynaecology (1:10), obstetrics and gynaecology theatre sessions and outpatient clinics in obstetrics and gynaecology. The successful applicant should have interest in areas that complement those of the existing Consultant staff and will have a range of opportunities to develop special interests in either obstetrics or gynaecology. The out of hours is non-resident on call for obstetrics and gynaecology at St John’s 1:11 with prospective cover.

The job plan will be 10 programmed activities (PA) per week which will include one programmed activity for clinical administration (Admin) and one supporting professional activity (SPA) session as is the standard arrangement for new posts in Scotland.

NHS Lothian has a commitment to developing a cross-site service, working patterns and pathways between the RIE and St John’s Hospital. Quality improvement and Patient safety are a priority, and the service is committed to responding to the recommendations and learning from adverse events. A patient centred; multidisciplinary review process has been developed.

All consultants contribute to adverse event reviews, guidelines, quality improvement, complaints, departmental and undergraduate teaching as part of their SPA time allocation.
