Job description

This is a new post to provide enhanced quality care to persons with kidney disease. The primary intention is to allow clinical supervision of a growing population of renal transplant recipients. The contribution may be directly as a transplant physician or by allowing existing consultants to make a greater contribution to transplantation by back filling their existing responsibilities.

The successful candidate will contribute to the provision of the Belfast Trust’s Nephrology services as a whole-time consultant in nephrology for the Belfast Trust.

The post provides nephrology services to the regional centre based in Belfast and in other Trusts as agreed, with responsibilities across general nephrology, renal transplantation, renal replacement therapy and acute consultation nephrology.

The successful candidate will work within the Regional Nephrology and Transplant Unit, contributing to inpatient, outpatient, transplant, dialysis, quality improvement, teaching, research, audit and service development activities.

Main duties and responsibilities

• Contribute, in conjunction with the other Consultant Physicians, to the provision of the Belfast Trust’s Nephrology services.
• Provide a regular Renal Failure Outpatient Clinic (GN or LCC) at Belfast City Hospital on alternate weeks, with an average workload of 1 new patient and 7 reviews.
• Provide a weekly Transplant Clinic at Belfast City Hospital, with an average workload of 12 patients.
• Participate in inpatient ward supervision for 4–5 months per year across general nephrology, renal transplant and renal consultation areas.
• Contribute to the ward cover structure whereby three physicians cover inpatient Transplantation, General Nephrology and Acute Consultation Nephrology based on the RVH site.
• Participate pro-rata in the Renal Physician on-call rota, currently shared with three colleagues from the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust; the on-call frequency is one night in every 11 and one weekend in 11.
• Undertake a lead role, if desired, in the development of a novel quality-improving CKD or renal replacement therapy programme.
• Contribute to the efficient management of the Unit.
• Regularly audit clinical practice in accordance with national specialty standards.
• Undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of the department in conjunction with colleagues.
• Maintain staff relationships and morale among staff reporting to the postholder.
• Delegate appropriate responsibility and authority to staff within the postholder’s control while retaining overall responsibility and accountability for results.
• Undertake management roles in relation to the activities of the specialty and the Belfast Trust when required.
• Identify objectives with the Clinical Director and agree an action plan ensuring personal development.
• Participate in the selection and appointment of staff in accordance with Trust procedures.
• Participate fully in Consultant Appraisal processes and bring to the attention of appraisers any issues which may adversely affect performance.
• Participate in the Directorate audit programme and undertake continuing educational activities necessary to remain accredited by the Royal College.
• Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate medical students and the training of junior medical staff.
• Take responsibility for the training and supervision of medical and dental students and junior medical and dental staff who work with the postholder, and teach multiprofessional staff when required.
• Participate in clinical research and develop research interests where appropriate, with support from the Regional Nephrology and Transplant Unit and its university links.
• Work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of clinical services and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
• Ensure that adequate arrangements are in place for hospital staff involved in the care of the postholder’s patients to contact the postholder when necessary.
• Work in teams with a strong multidisciplinary emphasis.
• Provide appropriate clinical cover at the Royal Victoria Hospital renal consultation service, with a maximum of two months per year allocated to RVH cover.

Person specification

Essential criteria

• Essential: Full registration with the General Medical Council and a Licence to Practise (must have both at time of appointment)
• Essential: Membership of Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent
• Essential: Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Renal Medicine via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview date), CESR or European Community Rights
• Essential: Competency in the placement of temporary femoral and internal jugular haemodialysis catheters

Desirable criteria

• Desirable: Additional specialist interest in kidney transplantation
• Desirable: Competency in transplant kidney biopsy
• Desirable: Evidence of participation in audit or quality improvement and their use in improving clinical practice
• Desirable: Evidence of acquisition of additional skills through post graduate study
