NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday, office hours.

Maternity Services within NHS GGC are provided across three large maternity units with obstetric led labour suites – at Queen Elizabeth University hospital (QEUH), Princess Royal Maternity (PRM) and Royal Alexandra hospital (RAH) in Paisley. We have three Community maternity units (midwife led units) in Inverclyde, Vale of Leven and RAH and are currently developing our alongside midwife units at QE and PRM. We are developing our provision of antenatal and postnatal community midwifery care across GGC and provide a dedicated homebirth team for the women of Glasgow. We have approximately 13,000 births per annum. We have well developed maternity assessment, day assessment, fetal medicine, triage and early pregnancy services across GGC, offering care to women with range of complex medical and obstetric need.

We are excited to offer this new post for NHS GGC maternity services.

The consultant midwife will be a key part of our Midwifery leadership team, working closely with the Director of Midwifery and Associate chief midwife to provide high quality maternity care.

The consultant midwife post is identified by four principal role functions:

1. An expert practice function.

2. A professional leadership and consultancy function.

3. An education, training and development function.

4. A practice and service development, research and evaluation function.

We are looking for a compassionate and credible midwifery leader, with a proven track record in providing high quality midwifery care in a range of settings. You will be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical midwifery practice. You will be educated to a Masters level, currently undertaking doctorate level study or with an aspiration to do so. You will have demonstrated a commitment to your ongoing professional development, with evidence of ongoing education and training. You will have experience of teaching and providing education for students and registered midwives; we anticipate you will have experience of conference presentations and professional publication.

You will have a background in leading research or quality improvement work and will have a vision and focus for how we can continue to improve the quality of maternity services across GGC.

You will have well developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to understand complex data, evaluate evidence and provide succinct presentations and reports.

The role will be an integral part of our exciting next phase of implementation of our Maternity and Neonatal strategy, in particular playing a leadership role in relation to the Strategic Intent One, personalised and family centred responsive care; five, developing our team and six, engaging with key stakeholders.

The consultant midwife will provide some direct clinical care to women, in particular providing evidence- based person-centred birth planning with women wishing to have a vaginal birth after a caesarean or seeking care that is outside our guidelines. As consultant midwife you will be one of the members of the team who offers debrief and supportive conversations with women and families seeking support after difficult experiences of maternity care. The consultant midwife will also provide expert professional support and advice to all members of the maternity team and will play a lead role in engaging with our key stakeholders, including our Maternity Voices partnership. The postholder will co-chair our maternity clinical guidelines group, focussing on ensuring that all guidelines are kept up to date, are based on best available evidence and all staff are aware of new guidance and supported to implement.

We are looking for a midwifery leader with a strong academic and practice background, with proven expertise in positive multi-disciplinary working and leadership.

You will join a positive, ambitious multi-disciplinary maternity leadership team, working closely with our Director of Midwifery, Associate chief midwife, Lead midwife for quality risk and governance and the lead midwives for each of the maternity units and community and outpatients; as well as working closely with obstetric and anaesthetic colleagues, colleagues in the equalities, clinical effectiveness and public engagement teams, to continue our journey of improvement.
