Job overview

We are looking to appoint a substantive Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in Foot & Ankle surgery. The post will support the work of Barts Health Foot & Ankle Unit working across multiple sites including The Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital and The Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre (BHOC).  The successful candidate will be multiple fellowship trained and is expected to have experience in managing the breadth of elective foot and ankle surgery. They will ideally have international foot and ankle and major trauma fellowship experience. Experience of paediatric/young adult foot and ankle surgery and total ankle arthroplasty is also desirable. The ideal candidate will have experience of managing complex foot and ankle trauma, post-traumatic reconstruction and general high energy trauma. They will also have experience of working within the major trauma centre (MTC) setting. They will be expected to contribute to the major trauma on call rota at The Royal London Hospital, one of Europe’s busiest trauma centres, and also fragility fracture orthopaedic trauma service at Whipps Cross Hospital. They will be expected to support the Foot & Ankle trauma work within the specialist fragility fracture service.

You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and preferably be on the Specialist Registrar or within 6 months of obtaining CCT.

Main duties of the job

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care

Leadership, development and organisation on the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts business plans. Liaison and communication with the lead clinician, General Manager, Service Manager, Clinical Leads and Directors for Orthopaedic  Surgery across the Trust, and the Surgery Board Chair.

A major contribution to the department’s on-going efforts to improve efficiency in both the delivery and the management of patient care including the 18-week referral to treatment standard, reducing length of stay, meeting BOAST guidelines and managing the ratio of new to follow up outpatient attendances in line with commissioner expectations.

With the agreement of the Clinical Lead and Clinical Network Director, development of his/her own interests and specialisms within the speciality, including active participation in research programmes.

Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training including the approval and monitoring of on calls and locum appointments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient elective orthopaedic and trauma service by providing cover to consultant colleagues when leave is taken.

To provide evidence-based care for all inpatients and outpatients

To have regard at all times to all relevant clinical and quality standards including those set out in the Patients’ Charter, the 18 week waiting time standard and any local relevant agreements with commissioners.

To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the Clinical Leads and Directors across the Trust.

The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
