Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic, fellowship trained, Shoulder and Elbow surgeon to join our existing team. The successful applicant will  be undertaking or have completed a recognised shoulder and elbow fellowship, and have a demonstrable track record in research and publication. A particular interest in complex arthroplasty and/or elbow surgery would be welcomed (we would be interested to hear from applicants who also hold experience of upper limb conditions in patient with spinal injuries).  We have a thriving research department and the successful applicant would be expected and supported to undertake and publish meaningful research to enhance the national and international standing of our unit.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join the existing friendly team of 10 consultant Upper Limb Surgeons. You will hold 1 elective and 1 pre-operative clinic a week and 2-3 operating sessions. You will also deliver trauma services at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, on a 1:12 basis. When on-call, this involves a fracture clinic am, trauma list pm, including Saturdays and Sundays. In the of weeks there is 1 weekly fracture follow-up clinic and 1 trauma list every 2 weeks.

Registration / Qualification

Essential

  • Full GMC registration: registered with the GMC with licence to practice with no restrictions and currently practicing clinician
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for T&O v a)CCT or b) CESR or European Community Rights CCT/CESR date must be within 6 months of interview
  • Current ATLS certificate

Experience/ Specialist Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to take full independent responsibility for the care clinical care of patients by being fully trained in the generality of Upper Limb surgery and able to develop a sub-speciality interest
  • All round Orthopaedic experience
  • Post specialist registration Fellowship in upper limb surgery

Desirable

  • Independent surgical practice in core Upper Limb procedures (as evidenced within log-book)
  • Interest in treating upper limb disorders in spinal cord injury patients

Teaching, Research, Publications and Audit

Essential

  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research and able to demonstrate recent participation in audit
  • Understanding of the principles of clinical research and able to demonstrate recent research publications/national presentationsations and presentation of papers in Upper Limb surgery
  • Proven teaching skills and commitment to training of junior doctors and other members of the clinical team

Desirable

  • Subspeciality publications in Upper Limb surgery with a specific focus in spasticity and paediatric upper limb
