Welcome to The Fairfield Family at Fairfield General Hospital, Bury Care Organisation! We are part of the larger Northern Care Alliance of hospitals in the region which also includes Salford Royal Hospital, Royal Oldham Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary.

We are looking for great colleagues to join our team. This post is within the directorate of Respiratory Medicine for a doctor who can lead, compliment and develop general and specialist respiratory and lung cancer care within the Bury, Rochdale, Oldham and Salford Locality. You will be part of a hospital and medical department rated as “outstanding” by the CQC, and a close-knit community of medical colleagues who support each other. Come and see for yourself!

The Respiratory Directorate provides specialist services from our hospital sites and community settings for the people in the North East sector of Greater Manchester. It is a well-developed service with an excellent reputation led by a dynamic team.

Candidates should be on the Specialist Register for Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine (GIM) or hold the certificate of completion of specialist training or expect to do so within six months of the interview for the appointment. Three posts are being offered at 10Pas, all with 1.5PA as GIM on call with opportunities in the future for additional leadership and sessional commitments.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will lead, compliment and develop respiratory and lung cancer care within the Bury, Rochdale, Oldham and Salford Locality.

Subspecialty interests in lung cancer (including screening and EBUS provision), sleep, ILD, pleural and asthma can be offered. Triage, virtual and outpatient review of general respiratory referrals will be included in all job plans. The postholders will input to local and shared lung cancer, sleep, ILD and asthma MDT’s and regional asthma and cough MDT’s based on their specialist interests. Developing an acute respiratory “hot clinic” to allow patients presenting to A&E/ SDEC to be discharged with early respiratory input on discharge or to see urgent referrals from primary care will be encouraged.

Pleural day case procedures including indwelling pleural catheters are currently done in the Pleural assessment unit located close to the Respiratory inpatient unit. Thoracoscopy is weekly on the Salford site with input from a Fairfield respiratory physician.

This is an exciting time for a new Respiratory Physician to help develop and enhance respiratory and lung cancer services for the local population.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Primary medical qualification (e.g. MB, ChB
  • Hold MRCP or equivalent qualification or
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)

Desirable

  • Appropriate higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent)

Skills & Abilities

Essential

Professional Registration

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a valid license to practice
  • Registration on the GMC Specialist Register-CCT or within 6 months of obtaining CCT

  • Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

  • Clinical experience in Palliative Medicine and a broad knowledge of General Medicine
  • Broad experience in the management of all aspects of Palliative Medicine
  • Good understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Understanding of research methodologies and commitments
  • Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about change

Desirable

  • Publication of research articles, relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters)
