Substantive Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care

Applications are invited for a part-time (5 sessions) substantive Consultant Paediatric Intensivist with potential of additional locum consultant post to join the PICU team based at the University Hospital of Wales site in Cardiff.

Cardiff’s Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) is based in the new Children’s Hospital for Wales which was opened in March 2015 and consists of 7 commissioned ITU beds and 4 HDU beds. The Paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Cardiff is the only children’s intensive care unit located within Wales and accepts children requiring intensive care from all of mid and South Wales. It treats patients with all paediatric conditions including neurosurgery and is a Major Trauma Centre; whilst those acutely requiring cardiac surgery are transferred to Bristol PICU.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

  • To provide with Consultant colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals so designated, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and promotion of health.
  • To have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge (as appropriate) in liaison with Consultant colleagues and for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan (as amended from time to time).
  • To be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical / dental staff.  If appropriate the post holder will be named in the contracts of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To participate in continuing medical education in ways which are acceptable to the Chief Executive.  The UHB supports the requirements for continuing professional development and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities in line with the UHB Policy.
  • To participate in and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the Health Board’s policy on the implementation of Clinical Governance.
  • Domiciliary consultations (as appropriate) to Cardiff and Vale residents in accordance with the Health Board Policy.
  • The successful candidate will participate in the on-call rota to cover the PCCU.  The on-call commitment is currently 1 in 6.5 but is subject to change according to service need and current workforce provision.
  • Any other duties with other agencies that have been agreed with the employing Health Board.

  • Completion of all competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care (minimum of two years) in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH National GRID training programme, including a minimum of six months of anaesthetic training OR equivalent training OR an experienced substantive Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care

  • Evidence of effective leadership skills
  • Understanding of management issues including medical management, clinical governance, service planning, and quality improvement

Qualifications

Essential

  • On Specialist Register for base specialty with accreditation in Paediatric Intensive Care at time of application OR CCT with sub-specialty accreditation in Paediatric Intensive Care OR Specialty Registrar with CCT due within 6 months of interview date for UK RCPCH trainees (note that Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application)
  • MRCPCH / MRCP / FRCA (or equivalent)
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding training

Clinical Governance

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation
