Job overview

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and High Dependency (HDU+). This is a substantive consultant post (10 PAs, 7.5 DCC / 2.5 SPA), with clinical activity primarily on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (90%) alongside dedicated sessions supporting the HDU+ service (10%).

The successful candidate will join a highly experienced and supportive team of consultants delivering outstanding care, innovation and leadership in one of the UK’s busiest paediatric critical care services.

Main duties of the job

Provide consultant-led care for critically ill children admitted to PICU (31 beds, ~1400 admissions per year) across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties, including cardiac surgery, transplantation, trauma, burns and ECLS.

Lead daily ward rounds and share responsibility for consultant cover on the unit, including out-of-hours on-call commitments.

Support the HDU+ programme, which delivers Level 2 critical care across BCH specialities, working alongside advanced practitioners, middle-grade teams and the hospital PACE outreach team.

Contribute to the ongoing development of the HDU+ model in line with GIRFT recommendations and Trust priorities.

Actively participate in audit, quality improvement, clinical governance and service development.

Provide education, supervision and mentorship for trainees, ANPs, nursing staff and undergraduates.

Engage in research activity and foster links with regional and national networks.
