The candidate would join a team of 8 consultants, 5 Specialty Doctors, 1 Registrar and 1 GP Trainee offering a full range of services consistent with a large hospital. The Ophthalmology team are a friendly, dedicated and forward thinking team within the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.
The candidate will be able to participate in departmental teaching and study opportunities and will be able to attend recognised courses where they do not compromise service delivery.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The unit is supported by a full Orthoptic department and a highly trained nursing team, providing a glaucoma service, RMD service and one-stop cataract assessment. The Ophthalmology Department is primarily based at the Treatment Centre for both out patients and day case procedures. In patient work and paediatrics is carried out on Main Site. We also provide a range of consultant outreach services in local community settings as well as a theatre session at SRP.
The post will be based at Queen’s Hospital, Burton but we expect flexibility to be able to work across all sites of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust should the need arise.

- Experience of formal presentations
- Evidence of ability to work as part of a MDT, sharing administration duties
Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent
- Possession of FRCOphth postgraduate qualification or equivalent
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice at time of application
- GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview or CESR application that has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC
Desirable
- Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
- Fellowship in paediatric ophthalmology
Clinical Experience
Desirable
- Interest in an area of Ophthalmology complimentary to existing consultants
- Experience in ROP screening/treatment and strabismus surgery
Teaching Experience
Essential
- Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates.
- Experience of supervising F1, F2, ST trainees
- Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
Desirable
- Specific teaching qualification
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
- Attended a recognised teaching training course
