County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) are excited to advertise for a substantive Consultants in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, within the Family Health Care Group. We are a busy district general hospital with approximately 4200 deliveries per year across two sites; University Hospital North Durham (UHND) and Darlington Memorial Hospital (DMH).
We are looking for someone with a specialist interest in Obstetrics however the successful candidate will have joint responsibilities for Obstetrics and Gynaecology, including on call labour ward leadership and obstetric risk management.
We are looking for a motivated and dedicated clinician with strong clinical expertise and a commitment to delivering outstanding care to our local community.
Main duties of the job
You will be primarily based at DMH or UHND, with an expectation to work flexibly across CDDFT sites in line with service needs.
The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology operates on a 24/7 basis and includes an Emergency Gynaecology service attending to patients coming through the Emergency Department.
The post will involve being part of a multidisciplinary team running high-risk specialist antenatal clinics such as perinatal mental health antenatal clinic and diabetic antenatal clinic. ATSMs/SITMs in pregnancy care such as maternal medicine or perinatal mental health are particularly welcomed. Other obstetric duties include caesarean section theatre lists.
Gynaecology experience is also essential. Gynaecology ATSMs/SITMs such as urogynaecology, menopause or vulval care would also be particularly welcomed.

Job responsibilities
Obstetric Services
CDDFT provides high-quality, safe, and compassionate maternity care across two main hospitals; UHND and DMH, as well as community settings to ensure support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care
There are specialist antenatal clinics, including fetal medicine, maternal medicine, diabetes, peri-natal mental health, twins & pre-term birth.
Were currently in the process of implementing a dedicated Maternal Mental Health Service.
Outpatient Gynaecology Services
We provide comprehensive outpatient services for gynaecological problems which include menopause, menstrual problems, gynae-oncology, uro-gynaecology, pelvic organ prolapse, contraception, sub-fertility, early pregnancy, and unwanted pregnancies. Colposcopy, outpatient diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy are also provided in dedicated outpatient suites.
Inpatient Gynaecology Services
Inpatient gynaecology care is provided within wards on both sites. Procedures performed include benign abdominal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, uro-gynaecological procedures, and diagnostic and operative hysteroscopic procedures.
Governance and Management
There are weekly departmental teaching sessions, weekly multidisciplinary labour ward meetings including core risk meetings. We also hold monthly clinical governance meetings which includes Safeguarding, Audit, Governance and Education (SAGE) and Evidenced Based Practice Guideline group meetings.
There are weekly local Gynae Oncology MDTs and a weekly meeting linked to the Specialist MDT in the Gynae Cancer Centre at Gateshead for UHND and James Cook for DMH. There are also monthly Colposcopy Multidisciplinary Meetings.
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology department has a strong commitment to multi-disciplinary clinical risk development. There is a structured approach, and adverse events are regularly reviewed.
Secretarial Support/Office Accommodation
Secretarial support will be available to the successful candidate. Office accommodation and a personal computer with internet access will also be provided.
Other Duties: Flexible Commitments
The remainder of the appointees professional time will be deployed flexibly on other clinical duties, administration, teaching, research, clinical audit, continuing medical education and professional development.
Out of Hours Responsibilities including on-call commitments
The role will complement a roster consisting of 12 Consultants at DMH or UHND
The Consultant will participate in the Category A on-call rota, which attracts an availability supplement of 5%. It should be noted under the Terms and Conditions Consultants (England) 2003, schedule 2, paragraph 1, it states that a Hospital Consultant has continuing clinical and professional responsibility for any patient admitted under his or her care.

Weekly timetable of fixed commitments: Details of the Job Plan arrangements will be agreed with the successful applicant.
We are re-shaping our core consultant job plan offering to be 1.5 SPA core, and up to an additional 1.5 SPA activities related to defined leadership, clinical governance, education or research roles and the remainder of the plan being DCC.

- Valid Full Registration with the General Medical Council.

- On the Specialist Register for the above or within 6 months of being admitted to the register by the AAC.
Desirable
- Other relevant medical and non-medical training/degree.
- Other relevant postgraduate qualifications e.g. Masters degree, diplomas.
- Management training.
