Applications are invited for a substantive post within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. Candidates must have full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and be on the Specialist Register of the GMC under Intensive Care Medicine.
The Critical Care Unit (CrCU) has recently completed a multi-million-pound upgrade and expansion to 34 state-of-art beds on the Royal Preston Site. The unit is a tertiary centre for several specialties including neurosciences, major trauma, vascular, head and neck and renal.
Anaesthetic Directorate is ACSA accredited by the Royal College of Anaesthesia and led by a team supporting the perioperative model recommended by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. This comprises a Clinical Director, and 3 Associate Clinical Directors for Workforce, Preoperative Care, Emergency and Elective Services.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
- Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services for the Department.
- Participate in the critical care consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleagues’ absence.
- Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
- Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
- Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources
- To provide an anaesthetic service as a member of the Department of Anaesthesia. This will be across both Preston and Chorley sites depending on Directorate service requirements.
- To undertake pre-operative assessment of patients as appropriate, together with post-operative management and follow-up of patients in appropriate cases.
- To undertake weekly theatre sessions as allocated of which a proportion will be delivered flexibly over each week, to maintain the high level of anaesthetic service delivery required by the Trust. These may include evening sessions, or, rarely, a weekend session (by mutual agreement).

Qualifications

- MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent Primary Medical Qualification
- Registration with the GMC, with a full licence to practise OR eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- Eligible to be included on the GMC with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) in ICM & Anaesthetics
Desirable
- Higher qualifications; MA, MSc or MD/PhD
- Hold the FFICM or EDIC
- Extended complementary skills e.g. Echo, USS accreditation
Experience and Skill
Essential
- Full training in Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthetics
Teaching and Training
Essential
- Experience in teaching, training and supervising medical students, doctors and the wider MDT
Desirable
- Trained Clinical or Educational Supervisor
- Formal teaching qualification or instructor status for a relevant course on acute care or the deteriorating patient eg. ALS/ATLS

- Involvement in Audits
- Broad research experience demonstrating leadership qualities and collaborative working
